NAXOS

Folks, NAXOS is what your are searching for if and only if you understand what I'm about to write. My wife and I spent 4 days there on the honeymooon. Here's what to do . Absolutely rent a scooter or motocycle and explore the island to its depths. You will be rewarded with beauty, scenery, culture, and magic. -Trust me. This is one of those places that you will forever remember, andn it will help define you. Naxian wine is sneaky and it will surprise you in the best, most mellow way. The sunset on the med. over paros is something to hold onto, you will understand. The town or city center is perfection - just enought to keep it exhilirating - but not too much to be cheezy. We will forever remember our short live on Naxos (highly recommended if you are one who travels off the beaten path). -Matt

Mattpotter, Or something else one may do on Naxos, have a baby. I did 47 years ago at home with a midwife that spoke only Greek and I spoke only English. It is a beautiful place and lovely people. Believe me, I'll never forget it. My Best, Joan

Matt, we're waiting for your detailed trip report of Naxos. Among the 4 places that we're visiting next month in Greece, we're staying in Naxos the longest. Thought we're too old for the motorcycle, so we're renting a car for 3 days instead. So, Matt, tell us what touched your soul in Naxos.

Many people on Fodors have their favorite Islands, but I share your passion for Naxos. When we first went to Greece in 1996 my wife and I read all the information on all the islands separately and we both chose Naxos as the place where we just had to go. Primarily because it's economy was not based on tourism. We were blown away by the town, the villages, antiquities, the beaches and particularly the people we met who were real Greeks making a life on Naxos.

We have returned 6 times ( the 7th in May this year) and every time we have found something new to be explored.

We are always happy to return to our lives in Canada but we leave a piece of our souls in Naxos when we leave.

In 1999 I "stopped off" in Naxos for 2 days...that turned into a week. In the middle of the night, leaning off my balcony at Panorama, I watched ferries coming and going in absolute silence, but lit up like a county fairground ... then at Appolonia on a bus tour, while other passengers sat sullenly in a taverna, an Irish girl & I swam in our underwear and picknicked on the rocks ... in 200l, we wandered around the closed marble quarries and then chanced upon on a working marble factory, where they gave us lovely polished tiles .. another year, I spent a morning sitting in an olive grove above Filoti, just listening to the sheep bells ... in 2002 on a bluff above the sea, I found a "dig" of a Minoan settlement, full of 4000-year-old bits of pottery ... every year, I sun on Ag. Giorgio beach just to see all those Scandinavian toddlers running around starkers, turning pink ... and every evening of every visit, I devote an hour to the sunset. It makes you understand the Cavafy poem, where he says the old gods are still around and can be glimpsed, even though their temples have been pulled down and other rites instituted... because "Oh, Ionia, they're still in love with you."

In planning our upcoming trip to Greece and after reading all the wonderful descriptions of Naxos, we decided to stay in Naxos for 4 days - and I just can't wait. I have been collecting all the information from all of you fodorites and have made it part of my file to take with us. We will be there June 24-29, 2006 and will be staying at Kavos Hotel. If any of you will be in Naxos as same time please let me know... would love to meet another fodorite.

Fifteen years ago, we went to Naxos for one week. We wanted to go to Santorini the second, but adored Naxos too much to leave it. Renting a motorbike, we (young and newly in-love) explored the island, finding deserted beaches, quaint taverns, windy roads and lovely little villages. The main town offered plenty to do for the evening. I discovered topless bathing but never got the courage to take it all off.

It sounds like Naxos still hasn't lost its charm.

DH and I are thinking about staying in Naxos for 4 or 5 days in October. I can't wait to see it based on these posts!
