We will be arriving in Naples on a P&O cruise ship on Saturday October 8. We plan on visiting Pompeii in the morning and then coming back to Naples and visiting the museum which houses the artifacts from Pompeii.

We don't want to take an expensive taxi tour of Pompeii and the surrounding area, as we have done that a few years ago. I have heard that there is a SITA bus station very close to the cruise terminal at Nouva Marina and that the buses go to Pompeii. Apparently the fare is very reasonable and the trip takes about 40 minutes. I have gone on the SITA website and cannot find the bus schedule. Can you help me with this? I also would like to know if we could bring my mother’s folding wheelchair on the bus. She can walk, but we take a chair for her when she gets tired.

As well as the bus information, does anyone know if there are taxis near the port that would agree to take us to Pompeii and not expect to wait for us as we looked around? We would then have to find another taxi in Pompeii to take us to the museum and leave us there. What are your thoughts and advice about this?

Do you know that there's a train that runs from Napoli Centrale station to Pompeii and on to Sorrento? The Circumvesuviana. I'd think, failing the bus, it could work for you to Pompeii from Naples if you can get to the station, but certainly from Pompeii back to Naples.

The bus brings you direct to the runs, if you travel by train, you have to walk a little bit to arrive! So I say, take the bus, it is the same price as the train!

I know the schedule is from last year, but it still used, and until now there are no changes...

Eh? The Circumvesuviana railway station - Pompeii Scavi, Villa dei Misteri - is just across the road from the main entrain to the ruins.

It's usually easier to find a clearly-marked major rail station than a bus stop.

Trains run every 30 minutes all day, journey time from Naples Centrale to Pompeii Scavi 40 minutes, fare about €3.20 each way.

Yes the Pompeii Scavi train station on the CircumVesuviana commuter railway stops right in front of Pompeii's ruins - not sure how bus can get any closer.

From cruise dock bus may be better but trains like Man in Seat 61 says run every 30 minutes and cost about the price of a cup of coffee. Note that Pompeii also has a mainline station in the modern town of Pompeii a longish walk from a ruins entrance.

buy CircumVesuviana tickets at the station - no need to pre-book and probably not even possible - no seat reservations on this metro-type train.

The bus is a great way to travel - far less crowded than the train as no one knows about it.

Pompeii is difficult to manage if you have mobility problems. This site should help.

A taxi that takes you one way will charge a metered journey which will be very expensive. The round trip with a 2 hour wait is a fixed fare of 90 euro.

I should add that there are now fast trains that stop only at Naples, the scavi at Herculaneum and Pompeii and Sorrento.

The National Museum of Archeology in Naples is quite a trek from the station - if you are pressed for time I would get a cab there and then one back to the cruse port. it's certainly worth it, but then so would be seeing the old part of Naples around Spaccanpoli.

The Campania Express (referred to by annhig) has only three departures per day and costs 15 euro per person for a round trip. Departures from Porta Nolana - the closest station to the port. The departure that may suit you is at 9.06am arriving in Pompeii at 9.38am. The first departure from Pompeii back to Naples is at 2.34pm which may not work if you want to visit the museum as well. The NAM is not 'quite a trek' - Metro Line one will take you there easily and in about 15 minutes. It is 5 stops from Napoli Centrale with no change of train. No need for a cab.

Back to where the SITA bus stops near the cruise ship port: is it at Nuova Marina or Porta Nolana? or both?
I think the bus would suit us better because at least we could take our mother to Pompeii and she could wait for us in the reception area while we look around the ruins. She doesn't mind doing that, as long as she can get off the ship! From there, we could take a taxi back to Naples and visit the museum.

You take the bus from Piazza Immacolatella. It is not far from the cruise port. This Google street view shows the SITA buses waiting in the Piazza.

There is nowhere to wait at the Pompeii ticket office at Porta Marina but there are lots of cafes down where the tourist buses wait. This area is also shady.

Thanks so much for this information--it is so helpful. I have looked on the SITA website to see the bus schedules, but I've found it very confusing. Do you know when the buses leave Piazza Immacolatella? We will be in Naples on Saturday October 8.

Also, thanks for the heads up about the cafes where the buses wait--perfect! My mother will be quite happy there, reading her English newspapers, which we have delivered to her, here in Canada!
