Naples to Palermo Summer Hydrofoil Service New Schedules
A lot of people are planning their summer vacations, and quite a few have posted inquiries about the ferry service from Naples to Palermo (see related posting). People should also be aware that there is a daily hydrofoil service between these two capitals, during daylight hours, making the journey in merely 4 hrs., 30 mins. "Sicilia Jet" is operated by SNAV. Schedules are as follows:
Naples lv. 16:30 Palermo ar. 21:00
Palermo lv. 9:00 Naples ar. 13:30
Fares for reclining seats range from 52.00 Euros to 77.50 Euros, depending upon week and day of travel. Lower fares for children under 12. Full details on www.snav.it Hydrofoil displaces 5000 tonnes, measures 86 metres by 26 metres, carries 800 passengers, 200 vehicles, and travels at over 40 knots (compared to 23 knots for the overnight ferry). The service runs daily from April 20 to October 4. This is the fastest transportation apart from flying.

The fast craft is particularly useful for locals returning home to either Naples or Palermo, who want to sleep in their own beds. Some foreign tourists might also not be inclined to endure the overnight passage, and prefer instead a shorter daylight voyage. A majority of foreigners would probably opt for the overnighter, and save the cost of a hotel room, as you yourself suggest.
