Hi,

Hopefully somebody can help me!

Im going to Italy for a couple of weeks as part of my university course and need to get from Naples to Baia one day and from Naples to Paestum another day.

All I can understand from the mass of information the internet has thrown at me so far is that there are trains to both places apparently but I cant find any information on how regularly these trains run, how much the journeys will cost, etc etc

Does anybody know?

RE: Paestum...

You won't see prices for the Paestum train/RT, it's a regional one, but it's cheap, I think less than 10E if I recall correctly. The trip takes 1.5 hours and the site is about a 10 minute walk from the train station. Buy a round trip in Naples, as you can't buy a return ticket in Paestum because there's no ticket office, only a tiny tourist office with limited hours.

**NOTE**: There are only a few trains in the morning to Paestum...last one leaves around 8:30, so plan to catch that one, otherwise you'll have to wait until after noon, which kills the day.

I absolutely loved Paestum -- a beautiful, lovely place with spectacular temples. Totally worth the trip.

Just need to work out how to get to Baia now....

Im really looking forward to Paestum, Im studying Archaeology at university so its going to be brilliant to actually see the things I've only read about in books so far.

You will love it. I'd been wanting to see the site for years, too, since college. You'll get goosebumps, for sure.

Hopefully someone will pipe up about Baia. You may want to check out the Forums on Tripadvisor, too. Sometimes they have more details about places that Fodors doesn't.

Think there's also the option of taking the train as far as Salerno, and then a CSTP number 34 bus to Paestum station - if that last morning one straight through to Paestum proves to be too early! Shout if you want more details..

Baia's awkward as the train tunnel collapsed some years ago, and you have to take the Circumcumana railway as far as Lucrino, and there change onto a bus that's now operated by the EAVBus line, whose timetable isn't easily found... I'll get back to you when I do so!

There's lots of Naples "what's on" information (and the answers to a host of "How do I...?" questions) in the 'Qui Napoli' magazine which the tourism people bring out every two months. Mostly it's in bilingual English/Italian - and a PDF version is available by clicking on the word "download" here....

I have personally taken the EAVBUS "Monte di Procida" bus between Naples and Baia/Bacoli. It also stops very close to the Museo Archeologico dei Campi Flegrei in the Castello Aragonese on the outskirts of Baia. My recollection is that the bus I took on this route was extremely modern, with very good air conditioning.

Didn't realise you'd visited since EAVBus took over from SEPSA in 2008 - but perhaps before the ongoing diversion of daytime buses on that route began?

Even when undiverted, the bus from P Garibaldi is supposed to take 55 minutes to Lucrino - and if doing the journey myself, I'd use the Cumana railway, whose trains set off every 20 minutes or so, and take only 30 minutes...

As it's only a kilometer or so to the site, I'd walk from the station... likely to be quicker than waiting for a bus, and gives the opportunity to see the historic lake...
