Naples or Sorrento?

I will be hiking the Cinque Terre and from there heading to either Naples or Sorrento for a few days to see Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius and Amalfi. Would it be easier to stay in Naples as I will be taking the train from Cinque Terre or should I stay in Sorrento? I will be staying for 3 days. Just not sure which place is easier to stay in to reach those day trip destinations. Thanks for your help.

Sorrento is much nicer than Naples. It's lovely, and there is a train from there to Pompeii. Naples is rather dirty and we didn't feel particularly safe there. My husband nearly got pick-pocketed on a crowded bus.

In Sorrento we enjoyed the evening show of Neapolitan songs at Teatro Tasso.

Hi tbb,

Yes, Naples is a bit gritty.

I liked my 3 nights there very much.

Among other places to visit, you have the Archaeological Museum and The Capella Sansevero.

You can easily do your sightseeing from there.

Enjoy your visit.

Funny, I did almost exactly the same itinerary back in 2007: train from the Cinque Terre all the way down to Naples, then took the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento. Obviously it's quicker just to get off in Naples.

Personally, I hated Sorrento: it felt like a big tourist trap. I regretted not staying in Naples, which I later came back to as a day trip. I found Naples very interesting once you get away from the train station (though that was almost ten years ago). Yeah, it can feel a bit gritty, so if that would make you uncomfortable, stay in Sorrento, which is very convenient if anything for a day visit to Pompeii etc. Do try to spend at least half a day in Naples, though, if you can.

Sorrento is an hour from Naples. It is a dormitory town for UK package tours and those afraid of Naples.

Naples is a 3000 year old city with history dating back to the ancient Greeks. It is older than Rome. It is cheaper than Sorrento.

Both are adequate for your plans.
