September we're planning a two night stay in Naples traveling by train. I thought staying close to the train would be easy to drop off luggage. Does this sound like a good plan or should I focus on a hotel in a different section of Naples. I appreciate your knowledge!

The area around the train station in Naples is known to be a little run down and "sketchy" and might feel a little scary to some. In part that depends on your comfort level in cities. Some people are terrified of anything "urban" so might not feel comfortable anywhere in a big city like Naples. I haven't been there in ten years, but it did kind of feel that way to me then. Maybe the area has improved. I walked a bit way from the station and found Naples much nicer - wish I'd stayed in Naples instead of Sorrento, when all was said and done. (I didn't care much for Sorrento, though none of it felt like the area around the Naples train station.)

If I were going now, I'd use my smart phone and Google Maps to navigate the bus and subway system in Naples to get from the train station to a hotel that's in a more appealing section of town.

You should definitely think of staying some other area of Naples. Take a taxi to get there. I think the areas around the museum and the galleria are nicer.

I stayed in a hostel near Naples station last summer, just 5 mins walk away. The quarter is okay for me, there are thieves and pickpocket but nothing more than that, just be cautious. People in that quarter are nice and kind. It was indeed convenient for luggage, and it is in walking distance with the main attractions in town (not short distance, but walkable). There's a subway line run from the station into the town, you can always take it if you don't feel like walking.

We really loved Naples but don't stay near the train station! Stay closer to the centre of the old town instead.

We found Naples to be gritty, but loved its charm. You can see our pics here

we had friends who stayed near the station for several nights during which they did not venture out after dark. They are not unexperienced travellers but are probably not the bravest.

I would definitely stay nearer the centre. And get a cab both ways - when I went on a day trip a few years ago we were trying to get back to the station and though we could see where it was on the map, we simply couldn't work out how to get there so in the end we had to accost someone who was locking up his shop [figuring that he'd be pretty safe] and ask him for help. He very kindly escorted us to a spot where we could see it, and went on his way, but we had to ask for someone else to help us to to get across the traffic to get to the station itself. AND the person in front of us almost got run over in front of our eyes, on the zebra crossing in front of the station building.

We still laugh about it now!
