Naples and the Metro

We are traveling on the train from Rome to Naples and then on to Pompeii--day trip. Big day trip. Okay, when we get to Naples, what is the easiest, fastest safest way to get from the train station to the Museo Archeologico? Do we need a cab? Can we take the Metro? If so, where do we get off? Really, where do we get off thinking Naples is a day trip from Rome anyway, but that's another question. Thanks.

You can get the metro, but IMO it's better to walk - c.20 minutes, & you'll get to see a bit of Naples & enjoy the atmosphere.

BTW I recently stayed a week in Naples - my 5th trip to Campania - and still didn't make it to Pompeii !! And during that week we didn't feel the need to get a taxi once, and only got the metro to visit the contemporary art at certain stations.

Hi F,

Upon arrival at Naples Centrale find a tabac shop and buy your metro tickets.

The metro is in the basement.

Take the metro to Piazza Cavour - one stop.

There are signs leading to the Museum.

Walk back to the train station - it's downhill - to take the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi.

Too bad you have only one day.

Caroline, where in Naples did you stay for the week? I searched for a trip report / info but didn't find anything--did I miss it?

Sorry AnnMarie, I haven't finished my trip report yet.

We stayed at the Hotel Executive which was nothing fancy but pleasant enough, and couldn't have been better located for walking around the centro storico, getting buses (almost all of which, including the airport bus, stop on via Medina just round the corner) & ferries (Molo Beverello 10 minutes walk away). I booked it through Venere, €114 pn for a superior double. It has a pleasant roof terrace & the staff were nice.
