Naples Airport Safe? Transfer Car?

Would it be safe for my 20something year old daughter to wait for 6 hours at Naples airport alone while she waits for my other 20something year old daughter to get there?

Also, what is a reputable car service that I can call to book her a ride to her hotel in Praiano?

Of course--but how miserable. Surely she can manage getting a bus or taxi to the city and meet up with her sister later.

@yorkshire, yes, but she would prefer a car to take her. She has never traveled to Europe and does not speak Italian.

yorkshire, if we are thinking alike, I assumed you meant Naples by "the city."

LeenieA, it seems a shame to me that she would spend 6 hours in the airport when she could easily hop a bus or taxi to the center of Naples and see a few sights.

There are a lot of car services mentioned here for towns along the Amalfi Coast. Cost from Naples airport will be considerable.

Naples airport is nice, modern, lots of good dining options. She would be perfectly safe there.
For six hours ,I agree, she could get to experience some of Naples.

Unfortunately Praiano is about 65 miles from the airport so waiting for her sister to travel together makes sense. But waiting in the airport for 6+ hours doesn't make sense to me.

There is a secure left luggage facility in the airport and the bags will be screened before you can leave them. Then she can head into the city for 4 or 5 hours.

Here is one car service to take them to Praiano (but there are many others) http://www.sorrentocarservice.com/transfer/

Totally on board with returning to the airport to grab sis and meet car service to Praiano, but no way I would sit in an airport for six hours, unless literally tied to a chair. It's not like they will speak more English anywhere else she goes. The cab to Naples only takes about 15-20 minutes.
If she has no interest in doing that, there were ample food options and a decent cafe in the airport, even one with outside tables.

Benvenuto Limousines is based in Praiano. It is family run and I can personall recommend them

https://www.benvenutolimos.com/

If mone is no object, I would suggest having a Benvenuto driver meet your "first" daughter and take her to Vesuvius! Or Herculaneum. Then pick up the second daughter.

If heading to Naples alone, she should have a definite target of something she wants to see. Naples is a chaotic town, and it is particularly unnattractive around the train station (where the airport bus goes), and the train station is not hear the best sights.

I am not sure I would want my 20 something daughter going for a roam about in Naples if she is a novice traveler, esp. jet-lagged. Yes, many people speak english but navigating the public transportation.... maybe if she has a destination in mind - the archeology museum? and took a taxi? altho I've encountered some sketchy taxi drivers.

Just sayin' my 40 year old SIL returned from Sorrento last week - his first trip to Italy. He found Naples and vacinity a bit overwhelming.

Yes, that is why I suggested Vesuvius or Herculaneum instead. Getting to interesting places to enjoy in Naples is not obvious if you are using public transporation. You can have a taxi take you from the airport to somewhere -- but it is not easy to get a taxi back (you can't just hail them on the street, and the local drivers are notorious for ripping off tourists). Also, het lagged people usually want some place quiet & easygoing. Naples is totally the opposite of that. And normally jet lagged people have a hard time focusing in museums.

Unfortunately, adding hours to the transfer cost gets pricey, so maybe it's not realistic.

But to answer the basic question: Perfectly safe to sit in Naples airport. Some people even like their pizza.

Did you say 20 SOMETHING? As in almost thirty? I suspect she is NOT going to be "overwhelmed" somehow by an airport, a taxi ride "in a foreign country" or anywhere else.

Most of us are well traveled - obviously this young woman is just beginning the adventure of foreign travel. Who knows her comfort level? There are plenty of people in my life, very high functioning, that find jumping into a foreign culture intimidating. They are always asking me questions about aspects of my travel that seem simple to me but are unfamiliar and off-putting to them.

Let the OP and her daughter sort out what is best for her. She may laugh at mom's concerns and dive into the adventure and chaos of Naples. It's good that there are several views expressed but to many, Naples is intense.

We used Amalfi Drive Limousine for a transfer from Naples to Praiano and they were great.

The Naples airport is relatively small and very easy to navigate. Your daughter will most certainly be fine there.

Yes, Naples is chaotic, and that creates stress for some people, but it is a wonderful city, so if she is at all adventurous, she could do something with that time.

Going to Herculaneum is a great idea! With five or six hours, it would be easy and leisurely.
The alibus from the airport to the train station is fine. The train station area is a bit sketchy, but if she leaves her luggage at the airport and carries her passport inside her clothes, she should be fine. IMHO, that is the best way to go to Herculaneum because Naples is one place where I find taxis a pain and notorious for overcharging. You could always hire a driver, but the train is actually very easy and certainly cheaper.

Thank you ALL for your suggestions and experiences. This 26 year old daughter has never traveled to Europe, so she would prefer a car service to pick her up at the airport. The 22 year old has studied abroad, and will be coming with other friends and has just completed el camino in Spain and has no problem traveling in Europe. The 22 year old will take public transportation to Praiano with her friends when they get to Naples airport.

1)So, for the older less experienced traveler, if her flight gets in at 10AM, what time should the car service person be there to pick her up?

I've gotten prices from Renato Cuomo Limousine Service.

I will also look into the ones that were suggested here.

Cuomo said that we do not need to put down a deposit, but to pay 110 euros in cash upon completion of the trip.

2)Can my daughter pick up euros when she lands, or should we get the 110Euros in the USA before she leaves?

Hi LeenieA,

Your daughter can use at ATM to get euros at the Naples airport. It's no problem, although sometimes it's nice to have a few of them in your pocket when you arrive. That's what we do. It's a warm fuzzy feeling knowing you have some money in hand.

>>> So, for the older less experienced traveler, if her flight gets in at 10AM, what time should the car service person be there to pick her up?

I am not sure you have used a car service before. The way it works is you tell the service your flight number, arrival date and time. The driver monitors the arrival info on his phone and comes to the airport at the right time. They are very familiar with how long it takes from arrival to exiting the baggage retrieval area.

>>> )Can my daughter pick up euros when she lands, or should we get the 110Euros in the USA before she leaves?

These are the options:
- If she gets Euros in the USA, it would cost 10-14% more than if she gets in Euro zone.
- If you have someone who would be coming back from a Euro country, you can tell the person to bring back the Euro for you to buy. You friend and you both avoid middleman fees. A win win.
- She can get Euro upon landing in Napoli.
- If she is transiting at another Euro zone airport, e.g. FRA, MUC, AMS, CDG, etc, she can also pickup Euro at these airports. She must inform her bank that she would be using her ATM card at these layover countries in addition to Italy. This is what I usually do. If I am doing a layover at FRA or AMS on the way to Rome, Athens, etc, I don't wait until Rome, Athens to get Euros. I use ATMs at AMS or FRA airports. Eliminates yet another time consuming task at the arrival airport.
