NancyAnn
I am not sure if it is kosher to try and contact an individual on this board but I have followed with interest your questions on the Alsace since I will be there in Sept. You mentioned a wine interest that no one seems to have picked up on and I really want to visit some wineries, planning to bring a bunch back with me. Did you find ones you liked? Lucky for me my husband is a tea totaller who doesn't mind being a DD. If you find this message thanks for your input. A

"NancyAnn" has not posted on Fodors in nearly 6 months? It is possible she might see your thread, but you will get lots more help if you post a thread asking what you want to know.
Try a title something like "Help w/ wineries in Alsace" - there are lots of "France pros" here who can help you.

Hi A,
> I really want to visit some wineries, planning to bring a bunch back with me.<
Every little town along the Rte du Vins has wineries, winery outlets, coop stores and wine shops.
You will have to put the wine in checked luggage.
The airlines are enforcing the weight limits on checked luggage.
A bottle of wine weighs about 4 lb.
Where will you be in Alsace?

Wineries are around every corner in Alsace. It will be impossible to avoid them.
What kind of input are you looking for? As janis mentioned, NancyAnn hasn't been around here for ages, but I don't think that matters much, as NancyAnn's taste in wine might differ completely from yours. Personally, I'm not much of an Alsatian wine drinker, but I do like my Trimbach from time to time.
All you need to do is visit as many dégustations as you can stomach and pick out wine that appeal to YOU. ira has explained the ins and outs of getting it back home.
I'm also really curious as to what a tea totaller is - I thought I had a corner on the iced tea addiction, but maybe not.

Hi Everyone, I have been lucky enough to taste wine in California, Hunter Valley and Tasmania during the last 12 months. From both trips in Aus and California I brought back eight bottles. I am very careful about the luggage knowing wine is my favorite souvenir. I check my luggage limits, pack light. Previously I have gone with one bag and come back with two. In the case of France my husband and I will share one bag going and have two coming back. I keep all my receipts and declare everything openly at Canadian customs and have never had a problem. As for looking for recommendations of wineries I love to taste wine with other people who like wine. Whereever I go during the course of a day I will always find wine I like but the wineries I remember are where the people enjoyed talking about why they like to make wine and why there viniculture is unique. I was thinking people might have found some friendly wineries. For example I am from south western Ont Canada and wine taste in our Niagara region about once every 8 weeks. We are up to maybe 100 wineries down there now between Niagara on the Lake and the Bench. If you were to study the area and read the publicity you would prob end up at Hillebrands, Inniskillin, Peller and Magnotta. If I was sending someone there these would be the bottom of my list. We like Konzelmans, Malvoire, Fielding, Creekside and more. I believe the terroir comes thru more in these small batch vintners. I guess thats the kind of info I would like. We will be staying in a gite in Dambach la Ville for 5 days but will be crossing at least one day into the Black Forest.

Then, once again, I recommend you re-post w/ a title that tells others what you are looking for. A title like "NancyAnn" won't make any sense to any one but her - and she hasn't posted here in months.
You will get LOTS of help - if folks know what you are asking. I'm not being a pest here, honest. Just trying to get you the help you want. . . . . . .
