For those who have been to both of these areas:
Right now I am planning to spend about 2 full days sightseeing in the Myvatn/Krafla area. We will have our own rental car during this time to see as much as we can.
My question is... if we see this area, is it also worth it, time and expense-wise, to see the Landmannalaugar area in the south? Do want to duplicate similar sights when our time is limited. We will be in Vik for 1 night and Reykjavik for 4 nights, so this area is not too far away for a day trip.
And if so, what is the best tour company for this trip to the interior in your experience?
Thank you. derek

Hi Derek,
The Myvatn area is beautiful and completely different from Landmannalaugar. You should definitely go there. There are some tour companies that have 1 day trips to Landmannalaugar (about 10 hours). They pick you from your hotel in Reykjavik (not from Vik). I used Highlanders and was pleased but am sure that the other companies are also good. They use vehicles called super jeeps (with huge wheels). The driver-guide we had was very knowledgeable and pleasant. Don't try to drive by yourself to Landmannalaugar! The dirt roads are unmarked and our driver had to rescue with our super jeep 2 vehicles that got stuck in rivers that they tried to cross. Pretty frightening!
You will love Iceland. If you have the time and money, I also recommend the trip to Askja (from Myvatn). It is also a magnificent trip and copmletely different from the trip to Landmannalaugar.
