Mykonos - beach or town?

Hello,

My husband and I are traveling to Mykonos in early September and cannot decide if we should stay closer to Mykonos Town or closer to one of the beaches.

We are in our early 30's and want to spend our days at the beach but our nights will be spent at restaurants and bars enjoying the local culture. Our budget is roughly $200 to $300 US dollars a night and we'll be in Mykonos for 6 nights.

Are there any hotels near Mykonos Town that are within a 10 minute or so walk to a beach?

Any recommendations would be so helpful!!

Thank you!

we once found that staying a little out of town at it's best beach in front of the sleek Princess Hotel (a Jane Fonda/Ted Turner haunt when they were still married). You can walk to town; it's a little hike along the waterfront...we hitched a ride twice...and once the hotel manager took us in his pickup.

If you stay in Mykonos Town, then you should take the local bus to all the nice beaches. ( or a beach - boat combination)

There is no nice beach in walking distance from Mykonos Town....

Tower stayed at the Princess of Mykonos hotel, that is located in Agios Stefanos, about 4 km from Mykonos Town, a nice beach with hotels, beach bars and some restaurants.

Similar to Agios Stefanos is Ornos, on the other side of the town.

I would suggest staying at a hotel in town, so that will you be in walking distance to everywhere ( Mykonos has an amazing offer on great bars, cafes, restaurants and shops)

Thanks for the replies! We're still debating where to stay but if we look at Mykonos Town, do you have any recommendations for hotels? We'd love a 4 star hotel and our budget is $200 to $325 US dollars a night.

Staying in Mykonos Town doesn't mean that you won't have to walk... with the exception of a very few hotels that are located near the old harbour, most hotels are located above the town on the hill....
I would recommend the following hotels :

Hermes, Andronikos, Adonis and Ilio Maris.
Have a look at www.booking.com but do contact also the hotel directly, you might get a better deal

The most famous beaches on the island are platy gialos and Psarou beach. Especially in Psarou you will meet all holywood celebrities in September.

A good five star hotel close to those island (offering 4 star prices)is palladium boutique hotel.

You can find for 200€ http://www.hotelpalladium.gr/

If you select the option "smart booking" you will see a high discount for 6 nights. (Have a look: https://palladium.reserve-online.net/)

Another Solution would be (closer to town) the Saint John hotel in Mykonos in Aghios ioannis. If you check the google maps you will see that it's very close to the town. http://www.saintjohn.gr/

BTW Both hotels above offer programs with a free car if you stay more than 3 days.

If you wish cheaper solutions and not five stars, have a look at the nissaki boutique hotel or Petinos beach hotels in Platys Gialos.

Cheers

Platy Gialos is a crowded beach, there are much nicer beaches on the island....
Platy Gialos is a beach for families with screaming children....but also a transit point for those who want to take the boat to the nicest beaches of the island :
Paranga, Paradise, Super Paradise and Elia.
All these beaches can also be reached by car.

Psarou is a (Greek) celebrity beach, overpriced and crowded... not fun at all to be there.......

If you want a beach that has no crowds, consider this hotel. It is about a twenty minute walk to town, but they do have a shuttle. The beach is just below the pool. A two minute walk.

There is also a 15 minute walk in a different direction that has some good restaurants.

You would want to make sure you had an ocean front room and not a garden view. www.Mykonosgrand.gr

I've actually been looking at the www.Mykonosgrand.gr. Do you know if any of the town buses are located near the hotel in case we'd like to try a few beaches since we are in Mykonos for 5 days?

Three other hotels I have been looking at are: Grand Beach Mykonos, Adonis and Mykonos Bay Hotel. Does anyone recommend any of those to be close to the town and within walking distance of a bus to get to the beaches?

Lauran17; On the web site for the Mynonos Grand, scroll down and on the left there is an 'ask a question' via e-mail.

From the 3 hotels that you mentioned, Adonis is the closest one to where the busses are leaving to Platys Gialos ( from where you will take a boat)

Megali Ammos is not a nice beach..... so no matter how promising the websites of the hotels are. i would never stay there for swimming.....

I recommended hotel Andronikos, which is a fabulous hip hotel ( and within your budget i think)and close to the bus for the Platys Gialos as well...
Hotels located in Agios Ioannis are nice ( St. John , Mykonos Grand) but not in walking distance to the town of Mykonos...

Since iris mentioned the Mykonos Grand ( which is an excellent hotel) the bus stop is not more than 80-100 meters away from the Hotel.
