Must see in Dubrovnik

10 hr stop in port at Dubrovnik from Cruise ship in september. What are the must sees and must do's for that amount of time.......Looking for fabulous experiences (walking biking, castles, etc), restaurants for lunch and or dinner. Would prefer to NOT take a group excursion from Ship to avoid additional costs... thanks....

Walk the entire wall slowly...on a nice day. it's superb. Have a drink or something at the Buzza Bar along the wall-walk, visit the ancient pharmacia on ground level, both gates (Pile and Ploce), on the second and third levels of town there are many small restaurants and cafes...choose one for lunch. Wanda's had at one time been one of the best for grilled meats.

Quick put-put- trip out to Lokrum Island for an hour or so of walking among the plants and trees. If interested, the old sinagoga c. 15th century, on narrow Jew Street is quite elegant. Perhaps a little 10 minute walk beyond the Ploce Gate to the outstanding Villa Dubrovnik (has a new more exotic name now, I believe), even for lunch might be in order...its views back to the old city are spectacular. I will post some of my old pics for you,,just scroll down to the Dubrovnik city pics if you wish.

You won't have the time, nor the inclination to leave the outer confines of the city IMO. I think soaking up the ambience and not rushing around would lend itself to a satisfying, non-hectic, memorable visit. Enjoy the day...don't miss the ship.

Shar...some of these are scanned and go back to the pre-digital 70's and 80's when it was all Yugoslavia and we were wildly adventurous...others are as new as 2004-5 where we toned town ever so slightly. Always driving...some anxious moments way back in early post-Tito times...roads were disastrous, petrol occasionally hard to find, signage questionable, food sometimes scant. (Two different women, one my first wife who pased on in 1991, the other my second wife...two fabulous human beings, both great travelers, one lucky man)

thanks all. We are leisure people and don't feel the need to rush around so these tips sound great and Thanks tower for sharing your memories. Your comments about the women in your life are very touching. I believe they were very lucky women too!

Make sure you have some local currency - most places in Dubrovnik don't take credit cards or euros, and the auto teller at the spot where your cruise shuttle bus will drop you off has very long queues, and actually ran out of currency on the day of our cruise stop-off.

From memory the wall walk entry was OK (either c/c or euro), but we couldn't even buy a bottle of water without the correct cash!

Best to check with your shipping line to make sure about purchasing currency on board. We carried most foreign currencies from home, but missed out on that one! Euros are fine in Split, but not Dubrovnik, for some strange reason. Di

One of the things you will notice in walking the wall is that a lot of buildings have newish tile roofs.

You can find the explanation for this at the small war museum. Serbian and Montenegran artillery commanded the heights outside the tow and rained shells down on everything below despite the fact that the walled city was a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This isn't to suggest that the Croatians wouldn't have done the same given the chance, but it must have been pretty tense judging by the number of new roofs.

Some French tourist told us that all the replacement tiles came from Toulouse, if they should look familiar ;-)
