for the Staatsoper, or the Vienna symphony, not only do you need to book ahead, you may already be too late to get tickets.
Check this website for tickets. This is the official seller

you might have more luck at the Volksoper, or by looking at some of the churches that have concerts on while you'll be there.
why not ask your hotel if they have a calendar of musical events that are on while you'll be there?
Music and venues in Vienna can be confusing to visitors.
Firstly the Vienna Symphony/ Symphoniker is not the best/first orchestra of Vienna.
The world known orchestra and best is the Vienna Philharmonic.
Perhaps they are best known for their New Years Concert from their home, -main hall of the Musikverein.
www.musikverein.at
If tickets are a must . Hotel concierege or local ticket agencies can usually find tickets but with a large premium.
The Symphoniker some times performs in the Musikverein. Their main home is the Konzerthaus- a lesser hall than the Musikverein but still excelent.

www.wienersymphoniker.at
Philharmonic has a very large season subscriber list and thus limited tickets are available for sale.
A third orchestra is the Tonkunstler , the state orchestra of the state Niderosstereich that surrounds Vienna. They often perform at the Musikverein , Good quality music, a full orchstra and tickets less costly and easier to find.
You can look here for music schedule of the Musikverein
www.musikverein.at
culturasll website mentioned above is an offical website for buying tickets.
Bewareof more touristy and marginal orchestras like theWiener Mozart Orchra and like names.
These often have large prices and their music qualitym is not reflective of high price.
These type orchestras most times with limited numbers of playing members - 20 or so- often play in wigs and old costumes.
The Volksoper is the a fine venue. Mostly offering Operettas, a few ballets and less so operas.
Fine quality and excelent prices - 80 euro or less for best seats.
www.volksoper.at
This is home to many operettas by Strauss, Lehar etc.
