We're starting to think about a trip to Germany for next summer. Several years ago our daughter had a week off from her study abroad program in France and she and her friends went to Munich,Berlin,Salzburg, and Vienna. She suggested that our 15 days (not counting travel days) would be more than enough to visit these places. I hadn't thought of adding Austria to the trip. What do you think? Too much to try to fit in for the amount of time that we have?
Munich,Berlin,Salzburg,Vienna in 15 days?

Put together a tentative itinerary for Germany and see if Austria fits in. There are a couple of towns I would want to see near Berlin.
Fly to Berlin
Berlin - 3 days
Potsdam - 1 day
Dresden - 2.5 days (incl travel time from Berlin)
Travel to Vienna - 1 day
Vienna - 3 days (inclu day trip to Melk Abbey)
Salzburg - 2 days
Travel to Munich - 2 days
Home from Munich
Looks like it fits. It's more moving around than I would want to but it is possible.
Depending on how much you want to see and do in Germany you could definitely fit in Austria. As Adrienne recommended, start setting up a tentative itinerary. With 15 days I would pick 4-5 places max. We did a two week trip that included Germany, Austria and Czech Republic - but in Germany we only did Munich and Fussen. Austria just Salzburg and Czech Republic Prague and Cesky Krumlov. So, you just need to decide what your priorities are.

Yup 15 days not counting travel days spread across those cities would be great IMO - going by train? Check out these great sites for train info in Austria and Germany and if wanting fully flexible hop on at will tickets look at the Germany-Austria Railpass - otherwise scour www.bahn.de for discounted tickets that however I believe are train-specific and non-changeable and sold in limited number and thus must be booked far in advance, locking you in - but could be the cheapest way (cheapest not always the best IMO) - anyway great rail sites - www.ricksteves.com; http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id9.html and www.seat61.com.
You do live in Hillsdale, MI do you not - like a few years back or am I mixing you up - I too an a Michigander.
