Munich to Hallstatt in a day
My husband and I will be in Munich and are interested in taking a day trip to Hallstatt to see the Vienna Boys Choir. We will need to return to Munich that night and wondering what is the best way to do this or if it's even feasible to do.
Your recommendations are appreciated.

The performance (at the cultural center) begins at 1900 and runs for two hours, according to what I read. Looking at bahn.de, it seems the last train from Hallstatt is 1830. The drive from Hallstatt is 2.5 hours by personal/rental vehicle. So, the concert would end at approximately 2100, and you would be returning to Munich after midnight. Only you know if this is feasible.

Joannyc- they are performing on the lake as long as it is not raining.
fourfortravel- yes, we saw that the bahn.de stops at 18:30, and we have looked at renting a car but it is turning out to be very expensive with the insurance. I was wondering if there were any other ideas options.

Wow, on the lake? That will be a gorgeous setting! Nice!!!
Can you stay the night and go back to Munich early the next day on the first train? I know you do mention you need to get back there the night of the concert but.... just in case.

joannyc - the problem is that we had already reserved our rooms in Munich and there is no cancellation so we didn't want to pay for two rooms one of which we will not be using. Looking like we will be doing just that however as it seems that it's the only feasible option. Thanks for the responses.

If you're going to "eat" a hotel night in Munich, and if your travel budget can afford a splurge, try to stay at Seehotel Grüner Baum. Ask for a lake balcony room; at least that way the stunning views will compensate in part for losing a night in Munich.

I second this suggestion. The lake view from the balcony is magical, plus you won't hear the church bell ring at 6 am!
