Munich to Berlin itinerary help and hotel recommendations

Jump to last reply

Have never been to Germany before, and planning an 8 day trip in April - thinking fly in to Munich, stay few nights with (?)day trip to Salzburg if that is feasible - would like to see Sound of Music sights (I know, it is schmaltzy but I can't help it), would also like to see probably Neuschwanstein, then thinking train to Berlin, and will fly home from there. We have 8 nights all together.

How many nights in each city?
Suggested itineraries or 'must do's in each? (will also plan to go to Dachau and Sachsenhausen)
Overall, we like the idea of being based for enough nights in each city to get a real feel for them, with day trips as recommended, rather than multiple short stops in different places.
Would love some recommendations for nice hotels, good, central locations (near restaurants, transportation etc) for up to about $250 per night .
We are a couple in our 50s.
Thanks in advance!
