Munich-Obertraun-Vienna-Venice

We are in Munich for Christmas and then pick up a car to travel to Obertraun for a 3 day ski trip and on the way to Vienna go to Salsburg.
Drop the car at Vienna there for new years and then leave on the 3rd Jan to travel by train to Venice.

Will Idriving be safe this time of year or are trains feasible?

Sorry didn't mention there are 3 families travelling together.

Hi littlepossum,

Yes, trains are feasable at any time of the year -- I love them! Trains are not subject to weather delays (unless there is a really bad storm) or highway delays due to accidents.

Be very careful if you intend to rent a car in one country and drop it off in another country; there are usually hidden one-way fees that are not include in the initial quote. You need to ask the rental agency specifically how much the drop-off or one-way fees will be. They are normally in the hundreds of Euro.

If there are really three families (how many adults, how many children?), you will need 2 or 3 cars.

Have fun as you plan!

Thanks swandac2000

We are hiring 3 cars and have got the information about one way fees. Wasn't to bad at 100euro!!

Have you ever travelled on the train from Vienna to Venice? I'm finding the fare quite expensive for a family of 5 around $700. Seems a lot.

Hi again,

I live in Garmisch and travel by train very often, but not to Italy.

Since you are quoting the fare in $, it seems you are using Rail Europe for the fares? Don't do that! Rail Europe doesn't show the discounted advance-purchase fares, and their normal fares are also jacked up.

For your trip, try the Austrian or the Italian rail sites:

www.oebb.at
www.italiarail.com
www.trenitalia.com

And finally the best source for train tickets in Europe:

http://www.seat61.com/international-...m#Vienna-Italy

According to that site, tickets start at 29€.

Have fun!

Hi again,

I just did a dummy booking at oebb. After inputing the data, I clicked on "book ticket." I got the message that the timetable can't compute the data. I assume that's because it's so far in the future.

I did another dummy booking for 8 November, and fares came up for 39€ to 67€ to 102€.

You can play around with the dates for 90 days from today and see what the fares are. Then, when you are about 92 days from your travel day, begin trying to make your booking.

No problem at all!! Everyone has e a first time! Hope it works for you!
