Yup - RE does not offer the discounted tickets that www.bahn.de does for Germany - the 59 euro ticket is a discounted and highly restricted ticket - the RE one a full fare ticket that can be used on any train in the same category - just hop on - and those tickets you easily can buy in Germany - so IMO there is NO reason to buy that ticket ahead of time except to save money - those 59 euro tickets can be very limited in availability so hop on it - I am assuming the 59 euro ticket is not a full fare ticket and thus train-specific and non-changeable nor refundable if you miss the train.

In Switzerland itself investigate the Swiss Pass, good on trains, lake boats, city trams and buses and free entry to over 400 Swiss museums - even a short stay can make it pay off - great site for Swiss trains, etc - www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Also, for Switzerland, take a look at the Half Fare Card. It costs 110 chf and gives you half off practically everything that moves for one month.

If going to one place and not traveling other places in Switzerland and then you know exactly what you will be doing there then the Half-Fare Card may well be the best bet. But if traveling around the country at all or not knowing what you may be doing it may not be - but with the 2 for the Price of 1 4-day Swiss Flexipasses no doubt would beat the Half-Fare Card for most folks - even if traveling by yourself you could buy two 4-consecuitve-day 4-day Swisspasses and have an 8-day pass for the price of a 4-day pass. If traveling together you get 2 4-day flexipasses for the price of 1 - a rather incredible deal that could make it much better in this off-peak period than the Half-Fare Cards which costs $110 to buy then you still have to pay 50% on everything else, much of which would be covered 100% by a Swiss Pass.

So the 2 for 2 special alters calculations a bit (valid for travel now thru the end of November).

Depends on if your destination/hotel is closer to Interlaken West or Ost (East). Trains usually call at both.

I was quite happy with the fare.

139.50 euros is the regular walk up full fare first class cost

cheaper tickets exist for 89 euros - but many of these sell out well before the train.

So if it says only 139 euros that is standard fare - if discount fare is available then it will say 89 euros - these again are limited in number so if serious book as soon as you see a 89 euro fare.

I got mine for 59 euro for that early Munich-Interlaken ticket.
