Munich accommodation
This forum has never let me down - seeking clean, character, budget-end accommodation in Zurich, Zermatt, Venice, Salzburg and Vienna you good folks have delivered. Now, I'm looking for the same in Munich, mid July. Preferably where I can also safely stow luggage while away for 8-10 days biking, probably returning for another night post-biking. Any suggestions?

I have stayed at the same hotel in Munich since 1983. Hotelissimo Haberstock. It is within feet of the main station. I like the location because I do lots of day trips. The breakfast is fantastic! Clean rooms and everyone speaks English. No a/c. 3* There are lots of conventions and trade fairs in Munich which doubles or triples the rates. So the rate will depend on you date of stay.
In Zurich I stay at Hotel St. Josef. 3* I have stayed there dozens of times. No a/c but not needed. The best breakfast, immaculate rooms, and very nice, helpful staff. www.st-josef.ch
Zermatt- I have only been there once. Stayed at Le Petit Hotel. It was clean, nice staff, and breakfast was good except the staff was running trying to keep the buffet stocked. There was a group of kids who were stuffing EVERYTHING into their backpacks. I don't remember the price, but it was not expensive at all. Probably why the kids were there.

I'm not sure this fits your needs, but we recently used priceline.com to secure a room in Munich for $60 per night. We bid on a 4 star hotel that is a bit outside the city center. We will be staying there the mid-June for a few nights.

Check out the Pension Westfalia, which is located in a large manor house at the entrance to the Octoberfest grounds, an easy two stops on the U-Bahn to the Marienplatz.

We stayed there in 2007 for 3 nights, and then spent 2 nights in Mittenwald and Hohenschwangau, returning for a final night back at the Westfalia, before catching our plane home. Our host, Peter, was gracious enough to hold our two larger pieces of luggage while we were off exploring southern Bavaria. It was nice to return from our journey, with our luggage waiting for us, albeit in a different room. Peter was the consummate host, and we would definately stay at his B & B again.

I second the recommendation for Pension Westfalia. We stayed there for three days in June of 2008, and it was a great experience. We had a nice sunny corner room with large windows and a good amount of space. Peter was great as well!
