Munich
Does anyone recommend a hotel near the Munich airport (for a one night stay) and what is the best way to get there from the train station? (We will be arriving in the city about 9-10 p.m.)

Cannot comment on the hotel but can tell you at least one way to get to the airport from the main rail station is by S-Bahn Lines S-1 and S-8 both run to the airport. If you do this you simply come to the end of the platforms and then go down the escalator to the S-Bahn ticket machines/windows.
Taxi would be faster and more expensive, obviously.
I know there is a Lufthansa bus that comes IN from the airport but do not know where you would catch it going out.

How 'bout so near to the airport that it's actually in it? It's the Kempinski - http://www.kempinski-airport.de
We often stay here the night before leaving for a holiday out of Munich. It's the best hotel in the area and there's no question there is hotel with a better location--if airport is what you want.
If we don't drive, we almost always take the S-bahn. 9 Euro for single ticket or 17 Euro for a partner (2-5 adults) ticket (good for full day on the entire Munich transport system).
Don't worry about 10 p.m. arrival. 2 different lines (S1 and S8) run every 20 minutes (take the s8, it's quicker), and it's about 35-40 min. to the Hauptbahnhof.
Taxi runs about 60 Euro to city center, which means I only do that if traveling on business!

Kempinski is great.
Two other suggestions:
Hotel Olymp: http://www.hotel-olymp-munich.de/html/english.html
or
Marriott Freising: http://marriott.com/property/propert...rshaCode=MUCFR
Both are less than a 15-min taxi ride away from the airport.

Last year we stayed at the Arabella Sheraton Airport hotel in Munich. I booked it through the Sheraton web site. It turned out to be a very nice, somewhat business like but comfortable hotel.
We didn't get to the hotel until about 8 p.m. after spending the afternoon at Oktoberfest so we didn't really use the hotel facilities (we intended to use the pool but by the time we had dinner it was closed). The restaurant was lovely and we had a very nice relaxed meal.
Our early morning flight left at 7 a.m. so we didn't eat breakfast at the hotel. It was about a 10 minute taxi ride to the airport.
There are lots of photos of the hotel on the website.

I also can recommend the sheraton Arabella Grand--located on the last stop of the U-4, Arabella Park. Not much around the area, itself, and not so attractive from the outside, but the rooms are very comfortable and staff are quite accomodating. There also is a nice, typically bavarian restaurant in the basement + asia/sushi restaurant on the main floor.
Though, if location near the airport is top priority, I would opt for the kempinski.
