We are planning a trip to Europe and plan to hire a car. Right now the thought was to hire in Munich, drive to Czech republic (Prague mainly), then Austria and northern Italy. We would return the car to Munich.
Has anyone encountered problems, or "clear sailing" with this type of plan? Would we better off going Munich to Prague on a train and back and getting the car then?
If this is not a good plan - what are the options. - thanks, Bev

We are traveling with parents (in their 80's) who really want to go to Prague for maybe 2 nights to see "something different". This is a two week plan. We want to visit towns and villages in Austria and we have a week's timeshare rental in the Dolomites in Italy. We need the car in Italy to get around as Sappada is off the beaten track, and will take day trips to small towns in Italy and Austria as it is only 15 miles from the border. The trip will be fairly low key, taking in local sites and scenery as anything too strenuous is out. The question is really whether there is going to be a problem taking the car into different countries and how does one "cover oneself" if one is doing that. We can fly in and out of anywhere but right now Munich offers the best prices from Boston, our point of departure.
The only issue is to make sure that the rental agency allows you to take the car to the Czech Republic and maybe even Italy.

Your problem will be insurance in CR and parking in Prague.
Have you considered open jaw air tickets, flying into Munich and out of Italy? They might cost slightly more but will save you wasting time backtracking to Munich.
Just a thought if I were planning it out.
How about flying into Prague so you don't backtrack and don't have to have a car there? Train to Munich or Vienna to pickup car, drop later in same country as pickup to avoid one-way drop charges, either in Munich or Salzburg respectively? Train from Salzburg to Munich for departure if option #2. That is, if round trip to MUC isn't such a huge savings as to plan around being in Munich at both ends.

I would also fly into Prague and out of Munich.
You might want to consider:
Prague to Munich (get car) to Spadda to Salzburg to Munich.

A consider a circular trip to be logical. It's not as if one is backtracking. If choosing an open jaw, you have to decide if the extra cost of a cross-border drop-off of the rental makes avoiding parking in Prague worth it.
These are good suggestions. We are very open to flying into one country and flying out of another and it makes sense to start north and work our way south as the part in Sappada is to be our second week.
Why is a car such a nuisance in Prague? I expect you will be prebooking and staying in a ****(*) hotel with its own parking. And Prague is only a four-hour drive from Munich. And it is a nice trip back down through Ceske Budejovice and Salzburg to the Dolomites.
