"Move up" to an earlier flight from the one you booked
We are thinking of trying Stand-by to move up to an earlier flight that is the same day of the original booked flight.
Should we still go ahead with check-in & print the boarding pass of the original flight?

I frequently fly earlier on the same day - usually on AA. I always check-in 24hr in advance online when possible (i.e. domestic flights). Some airlines let you do no cost same day standby - others don't.
On AA domestic you can also book same guaranteed seat change for $25 - if done within 12hrs of the original flight time.

With United, when you do online check-in, you are given the option to stand by (without charge).
Is this option available on US Airways?
In any event, you can either stand by for the earlier flight and get a confirmed reservation for an extra $25, if seats are available, or you can stand by with no extra charge.

It should also be made clear that the question about carry-on luggage means carry-on luggage only, no checked bags at all.
I'm actually curious as to why you'd want to do this, nancy161. Is it the TATL leg for which you're hoping for an earlier departure? Because it's generally preferable to be on the later flight TATL, as you've got a better chance of actually falling asleep on the flight, and won't have to worry about whether or not your arrival is prior to your lodgings being available.
If it's a U.S. flight that connects into your TATL departure airport then you may have more luck with a same day change (particularly if you have status with that airline, though I'm guessing from this question that you don't).
Being moved to an earlier TATL could work if the later flight's been overbooked or there's an equipment change or something similar, in which case the airline will be delighted to get you there by any means possible. And I've managed to get a last minute change (on an award ticket, no less) that put me on a direct flight to Milan rather than being routed through Copenhagen (with an 8 hour layover).
In any case there's no reason not to go ahead and check in for your planned flight. If a change is made they'll cancel your seat on the later flight and re-issue your boarding pass.

Thanks for the replies.
I am hoping to take an earlier flight for my first leg (domestic), because I found out that my original flight is delayed most of the time, which will cause me to miss my transatlantic flight. Guess I should have checked the on-time performance before I purchased.
So, stand-by with carry-on baggage! I am going to still check in for the original flight, just in case.

If you're still following this thread, nancy161, do pay very close attention to mjs' query: are the domestic and TATL portions of your trip on the same ticket/itinerary? Because if not you may want to move the earlier flight way, way up, like to a day earlier, as you've got no "protection" whatsoever if the first leg is delayed and you miss the TATL flight.
Missing that flight due to a missed connection in this setting is a very, very expensive mistake.

Nancy - check US' web site to see what they allow. Most airlines will let you change and confirm an earlier flight on the same day (assuming availability) of travel for a nominal fee. For ex., on CO you can call 3 hrs prior to the new flight you want. If it's available they'll let you change (currently for $50) and get an confirmed, assigned seat - no stand-by issues. Would be worth IMO under your circumstances.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I am very happy to report that everything worked out perfectly!
We had decided to take the earlier flight on the same day, and prepared to pay the $25 each. On the way to the airport, the airline called my cell, notifying us the 2 hour delay of our original flight,(which will make us miss the connection to London). I called the reservation right back, asked them to put us on this earlier flight. "no problem!" the clerk said. "done"! and we didn't have to pay the $25!
So that was luck!! well, not so lucky for those on our same original flight but did not make their connection.
It was also great to be able to travel with only carryon.
