Yes one should always be aware not only in Athens but everywhere.
On the other hand this shouldn't mean that every friendly local is a scammer.... ( i am a friendly Athenian who likes to talk to foreign visitors... )
A few years ago i saw an italian young couple at the Athens metro, that didn't know which ticket to buy..
Since i speak italian i tried to help.... and got treated like a scammer, their reaction was thank you we don't need any help....
Maybe they thought that i was George... lol
I always figure that anyone trying to make friends with strangers on the street is either up to no good, or their lives are so exceedingly boring that you wouldn't want to talk to them anyway. So I don't talk to strangers on the street.
And guys - any woman who comes up to you in a bar and asks you to buy her a drink, esspecially in a place with which you are unfamiliar, is suspect. Chances are high that she is running some kind of game.
