Okay, you Ireland History Lovers, who knows what about Leap Castle? We visited the grounds in broad daylight a month ago, drove to the front door, verrrrrryyyyyy spooky. I've gathered some info on "The Elemental", the murder in the chapel, but I'd like to hear more about the O'Carrolls and the feast and the massacre of the Ulster tribe.

I don't know where ou live but I am in N.J. in Ventnor and the Travel channel had a great show last night all about Leap and other irish castles.

I saw the Travel Channel show Sunday night about Leap Castle and the other haunts in Ireland. It was very neat to see on TV this place I had just visited not 3 weeks prior.
Leap Castle (spoken LEPP) is privately owned by a man named Sean Ryan. So what you will be doing is stopping by the side of the road, getting out of your car, and looking over the wall at the castle,which is close to the road, give you a good view. I'll give you directions to Leap Castle in just a second, gotta go find the map.
I saw the Travel Channel special Sunday night on Leap Castle and the other haunts in Ireland. They did a great job with the TV filming.
Here are the directions to Leap Castle. Find BIRR on the map, County Offaly. Travel East on the R440 toward Kinnitty. Turn south just before reaching Kinnitty on the R421. You are going to go past a small village Clareen, and then pass two other roads that connect with the R421, then on your left side (the side you are driving on, over the side of the road into the valley, is Leap Castle. Prepare to abruptly stop as someone in your car will yell out "there it is". If you get to the crossing that marks "Coolderry," you have gone too far, turn around.
I found some neat information provided by schoolchildren at Coolderry School on the internet. The address is:

I've posted a reply three times to this Leap Castle inquiry, giving directions to the castle, etc., and they never seem to take. Just email me directly and I'll get you directions.
I'll try for the fourth time to get the location. Go to BIRR in County Offaly, and head east on the R440 toward Kinnitty. Turn south at the R421. Pass the small village Clareen, and about a mile farther south, on the left side is the Leap Castle. If you see Coolderry road marker, you've gone too far south.
For those of you with not so specific maps, it is between Kinnitty and Roscrea on the R421.

Okay, this is the 5th time I've tried to post this reply and these directions to Leap Castle.
Find BIRR in County Offaly. Take the R440 east toward Kinnitty. Turn south on the R421 toward Roscrea. Pass the small village of Clareen. Just after Clareen there is one road turning east (don't take it) and then one road turning west (don't take it), then a little bit further is the castle off to your left. If you go too far you will see the road to Coolderry.
Do not miss this. You'll talk about it for years. Even in sunlight it is spooked.
It is privately owned by Sean Ryan and you may find the gates locked. Just park your car by the side of the road and peer over the stone fence for your GREAT view.
