I went down the Mosel a few years ago. I loved it. You can sit and have wine and see all the vineyards. I don't think you see as many castles as the rhine but it isn't as crowded either. They have wonderful little towns.<BR>

The Moselle. The charming villages and Trier were wonderful. We visited in July 1999 and came upon an international folk festival in one of the towns. The stage for the performers was on the river!! We were the only Americans there.<BR><BR>

<BR>You might also try the Main River. From Aschaffenburg up river past Wurzburg, it rambles around the Spessart. The banks produce Franken wine, a very nice dry white. This little finger in the west of Bavaria is not nearly so commercialized as the Rhine or Mosel. It is a beautiful part of Germany.

The Rhine is spectacular as no other river can be, with one eye-popping castle after another, with your head turning back and forth towards each bank. But the Mosel is cozy, charming, quaint and homey. Obviously its my favorite, because of its atmosphere.

I agree with Ann - the Rhine is spectacular, but the Mosel is delightful! This spring we rented a small cottage in an even smaller town on the middle Mosel and enjoyed the scenery, wine, food, and especially the slower pace - almost devoid of tourists

About 15 years ago I took a week's cruise on the Rhine and Mosel. It was on a smallish, Dutch boat, and was just wonderful. We docked in several villages on both rivers. The Rhine is more spectacular, but the Mosel so beautiful. I think I liked it best. I'm glad I saw both that way - relaxed and unhurried.

It's funny, but I agree with most so far. The Rhine IS spectacular and the Mosel IS quaint and beautiful. But that's why I like the Rhine the most. Guess I go for the spectacular, not the quaint. <BR>That's why I'd rather spend a week in Venice than a week in a Tuscan villa. Well, to each our own.

The Mosel. We spent 3 days there (Beilstein) last June. It is a marvelous memory.

Patrick...funny but I too would pick Venice...but I much prefer the Mosel over the Rhine. To me it's a question of romance. The Mosel has it.

Having been to both, my choice is the Rhine. I stayed 5 nights in a third floor hotel room with balcony overlooking the Rhine in Boppard. I stayed up very late each night watching the constant stream of trains running up and down both sides of the river and the steady passing of river boats flying the flags of all the European countries...... doesn't sound much like excitement I guess but I got a kick out of it; or maybe it was just the Mosel wine. <BR><BR>Go see for yourself and let me know.<BR><BR>Larry J
