Are there any daytime flights leaving from the east coast of the US to Europe? We've always flown out at night arriving in the morning, sleep deprived and dishelved. A morning flight would be fabulous! I figure if such a flight exists, you will know about it. Thank you.

I did a morning flight (8am) out of Dulles May 2005 on BA. It was great!! I got to my hotel in London, walked around for a short while, and then went to bed. I wish more airlines would have morning flights.

I just did a quick search on Kayak for morning departures from New York to London with flexible date and flexible airports. There were lots of morning options on BA, Virgin, and others. I have been thinking about daytime flights, as well. I can't decide if I think the daytime would be better or worse...

Previous posters on this subject have claimed - and no-one's disputed this - that London's the only city served by morning departures.

Heathrow's the only airport receiving them, so if you go to www.baa.com/heathrow, then look at today's arrivals after about 2000 in the Live Flight Information section you should see pretty well all the US cities (none west of Chicago) with morning flights to Europe. There are flights from Toronto as well.

You'll probably not find it possible to make onward connections elsewhere in Europe the same evening

I have just booked a morning flight to London with Air Canada for February - leaving Toronto 9 a.m., arriving Heathrow 9:15 p.m.

I don't like the early morning arrivals either, so I'm curious to see how this goes...

We have taken flights from the NY airports and Boston to London., staying overnight at Heathrow and connecting on to Continental Europe in the morning. We never have any jet lag and love these flights. Because they leave the US at 8-8:30 am, you need to get early on departure day and are tired enough to sleep. We wish they were available to Amsterdam or other cities.

Flanner is correct that there are no daytime flights from N. America to any city but London, LHR specifically.

If your destination is on the continent then you need to plan on a night in London as there are virtually no connecting flights; the morning departures (from ORD, IAD, BOS, JFK, EWR, YYZ) all arrive too late in the evening. Still, a bed in a hotel knocks the bejeezus out of trying to "sleep" on an airplane, and we (addicted to the morning flights) find it virtually wipes out jetlag for the trip. BTW there are excellent prices to be had at LHR-area hotels using Priceline - typically around a third of the rack rate for 4-star properties.

We thought it was a great idea to fly daytime from NYC to London a few years ago, until we realized we had to get up at 3:30 or 4 AM to get to JFK in time. We kept thinking "why was this a good idea, again?" But after a wonderful and relaxing flight and a couple hour walk in London, at midnight their time we were ready for bed (even though it was only 7 PM back home) -- don't forget we had gotten up about 4 hours earlier than normal. The next day we felt great -- no jet lag and none of that stumbling around like a zombie after morning arrival not wanting to take a nap because we'd have even more jet lag.
We've booked to do it again this summer.

We like the morning Continental/Virgin flight from Newark to London Heathrow. You get in at about 8 pm, go out for dinner, and are soon ready for bed - you are tired since you got up so early in the morning to make your 8 am flight in the states.

We have stayed at the Heathrow Marriott (great) and the Sheraton Skyline (little older slightly run down but still very comfortable) using Priceline. I think you can usually get a LHR hotel on Priceline for less than $100.

Thank you all for your information. You are much better than I at searching successfully on the internet. Since our final destination will be Tuscany/Umbria, will we have to fly Alitalia to Milan or perhaps Pisa or is there a choice of airlines there as well? I do appreciate your help. You are my best search engines!!!

If you want to go to London and then take a budget flight from there, check www.whichbudget.com to find out which budget carriers fly between the various cities in Europe.

Few if any budget airlines offer flights out of Heathrow if that's where you're flying to. And arriving late in the evening will probably not allow you to catch another flight to get to Italy. So let's think about this.
Option 1) Take a flight from the US overnight and connect somewhere but go directly to your final destination.
Option 2) Take a day flight to London, spend a night in a hotel there, then get up early again the next morning to get to another airport and fly to your final destination.

I'm not sure the latter option is worth it, just for the "luxury" of flying during the day. On the other hand if your destination is London, it can be great.

Because of the pressure from the LCCs, several of the mainline airlines operating out of LHR have LCC-ish prices. Alitalia, for example, has LHR-Pisa one way for US$120 all in for most of April; British Airways and Alitalia both offer LHR-Milan one way for US$96 or $98 respectively.

No need to schlep all over London for ££s - arrive in the evening, sleep in a 4-star hotel bed for around US$80, take the dreaded Hoppa back to T1 or T2 in the morning, zip zap you're in Italy. Rested.
