Montreux or Vevey?
Continuing with the planning of our trip in July. We will spend 3 nights in Wengen, 2 nights in Zermatt, and our final night in Bern (before flying out from Zurich in the morning). Our remaining debate is choosing between Montreux or Vevey for 3 nights.
I have made reservations at Astra Vevey in Vevey and in a waterfront room at Hotel Eden Palace Au Lac in Montreux for roughly the same price. I know Montreux will be very busy with the Music Festival when we are there. I have read some reviews from the Eden Hotel that noise during the festival in past years was not a problem.
Any thoughts or recommendations to help us make our decision?

Hi mjknycmjk,
I have to admit that I'm a bit conflicted.
To me, having a lakeside room is all-important for Lake Geneva; it's just so beautiful that you should be able to spend every waking moment soaking it up. On the other hand, I hate crowds, so I'd try to avoid them, particularly at the busy fest time.
I've stayed at the Eden Palace two times and love its location -- I love sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine and soaking up the views. I don't much care for the Astra, though it's in a nice location just across the street from the train station.
How about a lakeside room in Vevey? Have you looked at the Hostellerie Bon Rivage? That's where I would stay if I were still doing hotels in the area. The HBR is literally in the commune of La Tour-de-Peilz, but you won't be able to tell that; it blends right into Vevey.
Good luck!

I strongly prefer Vevey. And I definitely wouldn't stay in Montreux if this is during the Jazz Festival.
I agree with swandav above, a lakeside or at least lake view room in Vevey would be my ideal.

Or, you could go the other way and stay in a hotel that's in Montreux but a bit removed from the madness. There's a lovely 4-star hotel called the Hotel Rene Capt that's on the lake but closer to Chillon in the commune called Territet.

I personally like this part of the lake a lot more than the business around the center.
Good luck!
