Montpellier - To do? To eat? To Shop?

My husband and I will be travelling in Catalonia, Spain for 11 days and southern France for 10 (late April - early May). Three of our days will be spent in Montpellier, France. We will be staying between the Jardin des Plantes and the Place de la Comedie. I would like some restaurant recommendations - (any budget) - recommendations for interesting things to do and and interesting "cool" or different shops you have visited. Also, any ideas for day trips that we might take. We will have a car.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Montpellier is a very nice city. Here is a report I made about 4 years ago: http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/5182

Unfortunately, I did not worry about eating or shopping there.

We spent 4 days there in October 2012. Very nice and we went to the beach where we had lunch. Palavas-les-Flots

We did a day trip to see the bridge at Millau. That was well worth it. I bought some beautiful leather gloves there as that is what they are known for -

Daytrips we enjoyed were exploring the Camargue, especially Aigues-Mortes and Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Another day we went to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and the Cirque de Navacelles. Also found the port city of Sète interesting. Near Sète is the town of Bouzigues known for its oysters.

I think Kerouac did a report on both Aigues-Mortes and Sète. Perhaps he'll come back and give you links to those.

Thank you, Kerouac, DebitNM and MaineGG. Lots of good ideas for daytrips.

Can anyone recommend any restaurants in Montpellier and/or any can't miss (or even moderately interesting) sights there?

Our hotel recommended La Maison de La Lozère for our first dinner in Montpellier. Indeed, it was the first dinner of a 2 week trip. What a fine meal it was! Superb food and service. This was probably our best meal of the trip. And, that is high praise.

Our second night in Montpellier, we followed Stu D.'s advice and dined at Le Petit Jardin. Another "WOW" place. A beautiful setting, delicious food.

Wonderful, Kansas. I've read about both those restaurants, but it great to get a personal recommendation. I think my hotel is just a few blocks from Lozere.

What did you like about Montpellier?
