I did once use a payphone on a plane, just to swank that I was over the Gobi desert. But that was fairly carefully places so that it wouldn't disturb anyone. The thought of people either side yakking away in stereo....

They are threatening to wire up the tube for mobiles. The horror. The horror.

Why is that so bad???? They already have that in Paris and many of the lines in NY emerge from underground in the outer boroughs and nobody seems to have a problem with it.

Imagine being in a crowded tube carriage with a bunch of strangers yelling "i'm on the tube" into your ear.

Most of the underground is in fact over ground and it can be a nuisance.

I actually had a fairly surreal experience in the Tokyo metro recently. The mobile phone works underground, but I was surrounded by fellow passengers all either texting or watching videos on their mobiles. Not a beep of ringers, not a person actually talking on the phone. Very eerie.
