Minimum purchase to avail of tax rebate at Paris/Rome airports

We are traveling to Paris and Rome next week, leaving Europe via Rome. I have a few questions regarding availing of tax rebates:

1) Is it true that we since we are leaving Europe via Rome, we should apply for the rebates at the Rome airport, even for our purchases in Paris?

2) What is the minimum amount of purchase per receipt that will qualify for a rebate?

3) If I pay through credit card, can I ask for a rebate at the airport in CASH?

Your inputs will be very helpful. Thanks!

1- you claim your VAT at the final departure airport - so Rome in your case.

2- The threshold amount is up to each individual merchant. Some set a higher amount than others.

3- You can get a cash refund -- but w/ processing fees, it will generally be a little less than if you take a credit to your account (at least that is my experience in the UK which uses the same sort of refund process).

thanks, janisj!

if I choose the get the refund through the credit card, how long will it take for it to reflect in my account? Won't there be any problems with posting? I'm thinking may be better to just get cash, even with the processing fee, in case the paperwork for the credit card does not get through in time. I'm thinking it may not be worth the hassle. what do you think?

"<i> in case the paperwork for the credit card does not get through in time.</i>"

Not sure what that means -- in time for what? In the last 5 years my VAT refunds (from different countries) have posted to my account between 3 and 6 weeks. Years ago it often took longer, but lately it hasn't taken more than one billing cycle.

If you are shopping in department stores in Paris, you can get the tax refund on everything you buy in one day, as long as you spend the minimum they require.

One of my daughters wanted a handbag and waited to buy it at the same store she was buying some make-up and shoes so got the refund on all of it.

The merchant must give you a form to take to the detaxe desk. You just can't take your receipt.

Happy shopping!
