Milan: Which airport?

We are planning a hiking trip to the Cinque Terre and will meet the others in our group and stay in Bonassolo. We plan to arrive in Milan and take a train to Bonassola. After the hiking trip, we are going to spend two days in Genoa - and then in Milan for two days. Which airport might offer the best connections to get to a train to Bonassola and which airport would offer the easiest/fastest way to get to the airport from Milan? We are thinking of flying into Malpensa and returning from Linate - but does it make better sense to do it another way?

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Bob, we realize that Linate is closer to Milan than Malpensa, but in order to get to Bonassola (connecting through Genoa)do we need to start at the Central Train Station in Milan? Or, is there a train we can catch at the station at the airport? We have the flexibiity of flying into Milan and/or departing from either airport. Does it make sense to fly into MXP and depart from LIN? Or, no difference?

Thanks again.

The flights would dictate. I think there may also be a bus from MXP to Genoa like twice daily--do not know the details.

No meaningful difference in terms of time. There is a new train from Malpensa to Milano Centrale. Not everybody has caught up with the news. There is a bus to Genoa from Malpensa but it only leaves once a day and takes 3 hours.

There is an airport shuttle bus goes from Linate to Milan Centrale station, which takes about a half hour. I really don't think it matters much what airport you use, going in or out.

Have you looked into flights arriving in Genova or Pisa? It could spare you some train switches, although there are a few one-seat rides from Milan to Bonassola if the timing works for you.

If you end up using Genova airport, take the airport shuttle bus all the way to Brignole Station and pick up a train there for Bonassola (possibly with a simple change along the way, but often not). If you use Pisa airport, there is a train at the station that will take you to Pisa Central Station in a few minutes. You can catch a train from there to Bonassola (most likely with a simple change in La Spezia).
