Milan to Florence by Train

We will arrive in Milan and will stay just one evening. Our first morning there we intend to do the few "must sees" and then we'll be off to Florence by train. It seems that the trains are frequent. Do you think that we should secure a reservation as soon as we get to Milan or should we just show up at the train station just prior to boarding? This will be in December on a Thursday say around noon. Thanks. Any suggestions as to what particular train to take or input would be appreciated.

If you are anywhere near a travel agent or the train station I would suggest a reservation.

If you are planning on taking the ES*, you must have a reservation.

I've always just gotten a reservation the day of departure, either at the station or over the phone. Unless it's a really busy travel day for the whole of Italy, don't worry about it. You'll be fine. The trip on the ES* is about 2.5 hours to Florence. Nice trip. Don't sweat it.

I would favor the "just show up" plan. You don't know enough about the weather or your moods that day to plan your departure.

Or here's one other suggestion - - I don't know how many of you there are - - but chances are, someone will hit the hay at 7 or 8 pm that first day and wake up well before sunrise and be thinking it would be nice to have something to do. Head over to the train station for a pre-dawn stroll and take care of it then, based on a best guess at what everyone one else will want to do.

I seem to recall that there are deparures at least every hour, but I don't recall that more than part of them are actually Eurostar.

Best wishes,

Rex
Just for what it is worth, I've been known to miss the train I had planned to take on more than one occasion in Italy because I was stuck in a ticket line for up to an hour or even more trying to buy a ticket or a reservation. Twice that was in Milan.
