Driving from Zurich to Trento Italy, thinking of an interesting alternate route to the Autostrada or Arlberg - Innsbruck - Brenner in Austria.
Anybody familiar with the above alpine road through Lombardia and Trentino? Culminating at Passo Tonale 1900 m elevation.
Should I worry about road closures due to snow at this time?
mid.May by car Como - Sondrio - Tonale - Trento

The "I'm moving/I'm coming home" Italy Trip Report...

It should be fairly long and slow. The pass is kept open all year long, but there could be some snow even in May.
I would suggest another itinerary, that looks the shortest one: Arlberg to Landeck - Reschenpass - Merano - Bolzano - Trento.
ASPS, thanks for your reply. Years ago I have taken the Reschenpass (Passo Resia) 1500 m route, and love the Vinschgau (Venosta). But I was concerned with too much snow.
Am I wrong to expect less snow by first crossing South to Lake Como, then head East?
Car rental without snow tires. Thanks
How serious a driver are you?
Have you considered the Passo dello Stelvio?
Top Gear rates this as one of the best driving routes in Europe.
Stelvio is one of the few places where you can experience snow storms even at the beginning of June. IMHO Reschenpass is low enough that snow should not be a problem in May. But check again one week in advance.
