Mid-range Hotel in Brighton Area

My wife and I will be flying into LHR in late September of 2013 and want to begin our UK trip by visiting the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and Arundel Castle. We had in mind to spend three days in that immediate area starting with driving directly to our hotel from Heathrow and spending that first day (a Saturday) just decompressing. On Sunday we would visit Arundel Castle as it's closed on Monday. On Monday we'd visit the Royal Pavilion. Tuesday we would leave the area and move on to Sherborne and Cornwall.

We're interested in finding a comfortable hotel central to both of our targeted objectives and are willing to spend up to US$200 per night including breakfast and parking. My research at TA into hotels in Brighton and Hove has been very disappointing not least because of so many negative reviews as well as exorbitant parking fees.

My solution to date has been to book a room at the Portsmouth Marriott (inexpensive Saturday night, using reward points for the other two nights)and plan on driving as needed. Suggestions for a better solution would be greatly appreciated. I know there is one but have not been able to find it.

Any thoughts?
