Mid Feb2017: 12 days in Munich extend to Salzburg - Swiss - Italy?

Greetings to fellow Fodor's Travellers,
I will need advise for my itinerary and has been storming where to extend to. We are of four pax adults and having 12 days starting from Munich on 11th Feb 2017.

1. Now, I need a realistic plan that we have to fly out from Munich after the 12 days and where would you think/advise us most suited route/place to go during this winter season? Was thinking along

a. Munich - Salzburg - Garmisch Partenkirchen/Innsbruck - Dolomites - Venice (drive or fly back to Munich?)
b. Munich - Salzburg - GP/Innsbruck - Liechtenstein/Chur - Milan (drive or fly back to Munich?)
c. Munich - Salzburg - GP/Innsbruck - Zurich - Munich

2. By car or by train during winter especially through the routes along Dolomites or Alps?

Note: More inclined to do the Dolomites drive.

Thanks so much,
Calvin

Trains go everywhere you want to so unless wanting to meander thru the counryside trains are best and probably cheapest. Anyway for lots of stuff on trains check www.banh.de/en -German Railways site;www.ricksteves.com; www.seat61.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

All your German trains plus Salzburg can be reached by the bargain Bavarian Pass where for around 40 euros you all four can travel unlimited on regional trains. buy that locally at stations.

to Italy book discounted tickets at www.bahn.de/en.

Yes in that area you may always encounter snowy conditions- especially at higher elevations.

Salzburg - Garmisch is time consuming both by train and car. I'd concetrate on Innsbruck, then go from there by train to Bozen / Bolzano and rent a car there for the Dolomites trip. Return the car in Venice and fly out from Venice; never travel back to Munich - it would be a waste of time and money.

Hello all,
Sorry for the delayed reply. Thanks really for the advise above.

I have now relooked into the map and decided to travel as such as below;

Munich (2days) - Salzburg - (3days) - Venice (3 days) - Florence (3days) - Munich (1 day, fly out)

Hope this is going to be richer in exploring the places and will be travelling by train. Salzburg-Venice and Florence-Munich to use OBB Nightjet sleeper train. I know I won't get to see the scenic route if were to travel during the day time. Night sleeper train will save us time to the next city and accommodation too. Either way, it's not cheap either.

Hope this will be a sound itinerary. Any further advise from season travelers/explorers in this region?

Oh one more question about the OBB Night Jet sleeper train - Should we take the normal couchette or deluxe cabin (much more expensive)? The trip is gonna take 6-7hours. Tks in advance.

Couchettes are kind of a crap shoot - depends on what strangers are in the compartment with you-loud snorers -folks getting up at night to go to loo- you still will save money over a hotel probably with a private compartment.

3 days/ nights in Salzburg? What about 2 days/nights + a half day on Feb 15??

I suggest you buy a ticket for Freilassing-Venice (14:24-22:40 on 2/15.) You'll have a little scenery perhaps, as you arrive in Innsbruck around 5 pm for you change of train, you'll pay only €60 - the current price for a saver fare from DB - and you'll get a good night's sleep in Venice.

Freilassing is a 7-minute trip from Salzburg. So you take the 14:15 train to Freilassing on a separate ticket (a few Euros) but just stay on that train once it arrives in Freilassing - it's the connecting train for your trip to Venice.

As I understand the night train, it leaves Salzburg around 22:00 and then drops you at 5:30 in Padova for a 45-minute layover for the trip to Venice.

Two possible night trains Salzburg to Venice and neither at convenient hours:

Salzburg Hbf 22:02
Early morning change and layover in Padua as Stu says
Venezia Santa Lucia 06:48

And a direct no changes one but leaves at 1:40am!

Salzburg Hbf 01:40 EN

Venezia Santa Lucia 08:24
