Meteora

We will be in Greece for 2 weeks, August 6,2000 and want to see some sights on the mainland this time as well as Crete. Any adbice on visiting the Meteori? Should we rent a car or take a tour? Any decent hotels in the area? Laura

<BR>when i visited meteroa we had rented a vehicle for a week. we found our way to the national highway around 10:30 am & was at meteroa in appox 3 hrs. the town of kalambaka is just before meteroa..we were there 1st week in sept & the monastaries were not opened for tours all day long. we arrived at about 1:30 & had to wait until 3 pm . if you want to take your time & not rush through a tour of the monastaries then i suggest you rent a car. we were only able to tour one monastary & really needed another day but our plans did not allow an overnight...whether you rent or take a tour..do not miss seeing meteroa

We spent two weeks in Greece in July/August of 1998. We only traveled on the mainland. There is so much to see and do on the mainland there is really no reason to battle the crowds to the islands. We spent three nights in the Meteora area. It is spectacular. You will not be disappointed. We took a bus from Athens to Kalambaka, and toured the area on our own. We walked or took taxis to places we wanted to visit. It was very easy to get around but a car would have been very handy. We stayed at the Hotel Edelweiss. The view was lovely, the pool refreshing (and sorely needed in the summer heat - it was over 100F most days!)but the air conditioning did not work well. But we found, in Greece, rooms that promise air conditioning are a 50/50 gamble. We also traveled to Delphi, the Peloponese and spent some time in the far reaches of the Mani region. Let me know if I can provide any other information. Hope this helps.

Don't have much to add to the other responses except to say that Meteora is definetly worth seeing. We were their as part of a Med cruise. It's very unusual and spectacular.Enjoy.....Paul J
