Metaora Questions

We will be in Greece for two and a half weeks in May, we plan to go to Metaora, curious if 2 nights there is a reasonable amount of time, we will drive from Athens. Curious about hotel that come recommended, we like quaint B & B style-I came across this guest house called Sotiriou " Petrino"-has anyone stayed here? Were open to any recommendations for hotels, resturants and activities in this area-thanks

Hi Kumabear,

You'll really only need 1 day to see the monasteries themselves - especially with a car. It is about 5 hours and a bit by bus from Athens to Kalambaka to give you an idea.

With another day you could drive to the town of Metsovo http://www.metsovo.gr/ - which was high on my list of things to do, but I ran out of time.

It is three 1/2 hour to the city of Ioannina which sits on Lake Pamvotis and has some nearby sites.

Nice area - not much to do in Kalambaka itself beside visiting the Monasteries (which are lovely).

With a car you could drive south to Delphi and Arahova on the way back (again its a few hours).

Have fun,

Naxos

Im thinking maybe we would stay one night in Kalambaka and then choose one other place that is on the way back to athens, we will have a car, the question is:

What the best route to drive to get to Meteora and from Athens (most scenic)

What we be another great, beautiful town to spend the night in thats close to being a half way point?

Also still undecided about booking this guesthouse called Sotiriou Petrino, any comments would be great!!!!

Hello. We are also considering staying here in June. Have you been there all ready and, if so, were you pleased? Also, recommendations for dinner?
Thank you.

Agree that one day in Metaora is enough. Loved Metsovo, it's a great tiny town. We were there in the winter and really fell in love with it. Ioannina was nice. I'm sure it's more interesting in the summer. Stayed in the old city. The pass between Metaora and Metsovo was a mess. It started snowing and traffic came a stop and moved inch by inch. The snow was beautiful but we were glad to arrive in Metsovo. Our little room had a fireplace in it. Many of the tavernas also had wonderful fireplaces with a cozy fires burning. Wonderful! No tourists either, just locals. Priceless.

We're planning to visit Meteora in September and have also been looking at accommodation. We came across the Sotiriou guest house, which does look interesting but I've pretty much decided on this place, as recommended on here, which also gets some favourable reviews elsewhere:

Hope you report back, as I will be interested to hear how you get on.
