Mediterranean tour for a month with a short cruise included

2 of us are planning touring the mediterranean for approx 5 weeks( either July/August or August/July).... as I have not done anything like this before I do not know where to start.....I would also like to include a short 4/5 day cruise.
I am from South Africa but my travels will start from the UK. My finances are limited so I would like to do a low budget tour.....we love camping.
Anybody done something like this before......would love to hear about your travels....do`s and dont`s and some possible itineraries

Thanks
Avril

AvrilFord,

Welcome to Fodor's.

You complained in another thread that you have not received many responses to your question. That is because, unlike the poster in that thread, you have give too few details for us to offer good advice, PLUS you have tagged the thread "Turkey" when you are interested in many more places than that. Those who participate here tend to look for tags of countries for which they are knowledgeable.

You state that you don't know where to start, but I suspect you do have more information for us. You have chosen to visit Europe for a reason. There must be some places you are hoping to include, and we could advise better if we knew the things you like to do and see. Be specific about costs--your idea of "low budget" may not match ours. Your first paragraph was a good beginning, but continue with details, such as "I do not know where to start. We enjoy scenery and historic places, hate museums, love shopping. We would need a double room (shared bath OK) and can spend ess than 100 euro per night. I've dreamed of visiting Paris, Florence, Croatia, and the Alps. I would also like to include a short 4/5 day cruise.

You can contact the Fodors editor by clicking on the triangle and ask them to add a few more countries to the tags. This will improve your response. Or just start a new thread with all the tags and extra details. It is easier for us to comment if we have more with which to begin.

Have a look in your library or online foe these 2 books:

"On the Shores of the Mediterranean" by Eric Newby

"Pillars of Hercules" by Paul Theroux

Both are about journeys in which the authors traveled all around (or as close as they could) the littoral of the Med.

Since you're trying to do this on a budget have a look at Lonely Planet's Thorntree forums as they are geared more to low
budget travel. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/index.jspa

I, too, came here from the other thread and I agree with ellenem that, in order to be able to give you a better response, we need more details from you.

Please tell us which countries attract you the most. Are you into night life or museums? water sports during the cruise or just island hopping? Do you want to cruise to different countries or concentrate on the islands of Greece or Croatia? The more details the better.

you say you have <i>approx 5 weeks( either July/August or August/July)</i> which leaves me more confused. Aren't "July/August" and "August/July" the same thing? Or did you mean "August/September"?

We'd love to help you plan your trip, but you need to help us with some anchors so we don't go drifting off into topics of no interest to you.

Thanks!

Thanks guys....you very helpful....this is my first time planning something like this and will need all the help I can get. My holiday times have changed and it will be as from middle August to end September.
I dont have a formal itinerary as yet, but this far we booked a 7day family in Portugal from 19-25 Aug..in Sao Martinho. Lisbon is an hour away, so we will most probably go there for a day! Although I would like to travel along the coast....Barcelona, Venice, Rome and Athens are definitely included in the trip. As soon as I`ve structured my holiday i will post it for your advice.

Kind regards
