Mediterannean Cruise excursions

I am going on the Royal Carribean, "Brilliance of the Seas" leaving from Barcelona on Sept.21. Our ports are: Villefranche(Nice), Livorno(Florence/Pisa), Naples, Venice, Rome, Corfu and Dobrovnik. There are several of us and I'd like to know if anyone has any inside tips for excursions.

My advice would be try to arrange your own excursions. Generally the ones arranged on board are overpriced and disappointing. You'll find lots more relevant info on cruisecritic.com

Venice, Dubrovnik, and Corfu are very easy to do on your own. Read some guidebooks, pick the things that interest you most, and off you go.

Vickmar - From Livorno most people choose between Florence or Pisa/Lucca.

From Naples choose any from Pompeii, Capri, Amalfi Coast, Ercolano/Vesuvius, Naples, Sorrento ...

These can all be done inexpensively public transport, as can Rome.

Hope this helps ...

We are just back from a cruise which included a stop in Livorno and we did sightseing on our own.

Here is something to consider for that particular port. For about $65 per person you could get a bus transfer to and from Florence...in other words transportation only.

We opted to do it on our own because we also wanted to go to Pisa so our friends could see the leaning tower.

The ship was docked too far to walk to the train station and provided free transport to a downtown area. We were fortunate enough to find a taxi to take us from there to the train station; we could also have taken a city bus. There did not seem to be many taxis available in the city.

ALL trains from Livorno to Florence go through, and stop in Pisa. You can easily buy a train ticket to Florence and stop off in Pisa to see the tower on the way; taxi from the Pisa train station to the tower and back again is a easy thing to do.

Trains run frequently, at least once an hour. Most offer 2nd Class seating only although some have First Class seats.

It will be cheaper to do it yourself but factor in the "hassle" of getting to and from the train station in Livorno and the time it takes to do that, wait for a train, etc.
