Hi,
Wikipedia says that Mdina only has a population of 278, yet it says neighboring Rabat has over 11,000 people. Is that right? Is there much to see in Rabat or not really? With 278 people in Mdina, I can’t imagine there is a lot there to see. Is there? How much time does one need to see the sights in Mdina/Rabat? A couple hours? A couple days? Also, how does Mdina compare to Valletta? Do most tourists tend to see one as prettier im comparison to the other or are the opinions very mixed?

I would not use Wikipedia as a travel source. A guidebook would be much better. I don't think it much matters how many people live in Mdina or Rabat. There's more of interest in Mdina than Rabat so you see that population is not a consideration.
Valletta has more to offer than either Mdina or Rabat as it's larger and the capital city (and I use the term "city" very loosely).
Rabat has a crafts center, Sunday market, and catacombs.
Mdina is a very quiet town but lovely. It's a pedestrian only walled town and was the original capital of Malta. There's an audio/visual show - the Mdina experience (didn't thrill me), cathedral museum, dungeon museum showing various means of torture (didn't appeal to me). A couple of hours is enough in Mdina.
Valletta has lots of restaurants and shops, a fort, main bus depot, theatre, archeological museum, armory, grand master's palace.
If you like churches you'll love Malta. The churches are beautiful, full of Italian marble, and there is a church for every day of year.
You didn't say why you're asking these questions but if you're looking for a base on Malta I would choose Valletta as it's in the middle and the transportation hub.
I have no idea what most tourists think.
You've posted a lot of questions on a lot of places. Do you every actually travel to any of these places or do you only post questions?
adrienne,
Ha. Of course I want to go to all these places-or most of them at least. Some recent events have sent me back, so I might have to postpone the trip, but I have every intention to do 1 huge 6-7 month trip of Europe. Wish me luck. Ok?
