Maverick Athens Suggestions for 3 days Pre tour??
I have decided to do a Greece/Islands tour in September. I'll be arriving in Athens 3 days before the tour and am open to ideas that probably won't be covered in the Athens part of the tour.(2 days)
I'm quite an OCD travel planner, but want to let the major research, cross-referencing and late-night online sleuthing go on this trip. Hoping you can help me out with some favorites for my pre-trip days. Anything from the most amazing cup of coffee to a quirky museum or park. (fyi - traveling solo this trip.)
OK - GO !!!

I have done the Athenswalkingtours.com food walk twice and like it. The Benaki Museum on Pireos Avenue has exhibits, restaurant, and a great shop featuring artworks by contemporary Greek artists. I also like taking the tram down the coast to Glyfada. The half day tour down to Sounio to see the temple of Poseidon is nice too.

Do as Heimdall suggests and take the private Athens Food tour with Athenian local Kostas. Note that this website has the hyphen between Athens and Walks. Go on an empty stomach!
Go to to the top of Lycabettos Hill via a dunicular for sweeping views of Athens.
Walk past embassies to Benaki Museum and also have lunch in their cafe. Also visit the wonderful Cycladic Museum on same street. Both museums are small and special.
Have a meal in Athens upscale Kolonaki neighborhood ,,up the hill from Syntagma Square.

We really enjoyed the Byzantine museum - it was in the main part of the city - a change from the "crumbles". It is a medium sized museum in a lovely old villa filled with many amazing icons - many are these large panels with detailed Bible scenes painted so tiny! Then there are other decorative and ceremonial items. It is very cool inside too we found it a delightful way to spend 2 or 3 hours and I am hoping to return again, sometime in the future.
