Margaret Thatcher to get a state funeral. Quite right too,
It has been announced that The Iron Lady is to get a state funeral, the first commoner since Churchil to be afforded the honour. The full bells and whistles, catafalque, horses, 21 gun salute blokes in furry hats. The full monty.
Quite right too IMNVHO. Thanks to Thatch we live in the best country in the world rather than the third world statist horror that preceeded her.
Needless to say the Toynbees and Dave Spart types are up in arms about it. This is, in itself, enough to justify the expense.
All that and I'll get overtime.
Happy Happy! Joy Joy!
Rejoice! Rejoice!

Shouldn't we wait for the old bag to die first?
She is not quite as popular here in Wales as in your house CW.
However, I suspect the Welsh would afford her this splendour, providing she dies and doesn't ever come near us again.

Look, let's accept for the sake of argument that she's the third greatest person in British history ("Elizabeth 1 and Churchill, in that order", is the answer to your question).
And let's accept that pissing off the Toynbees is about as good a use of public money as it's possible to imagine.
But let's also accept that her canonisation isn't quite as unanimously approved of as WSC's was.
So what objective criterion is there for giving her this honour? Tenure as PM? Winning a pretty poxy war? Putting some backbone into Bush 1?
It's the beginning of a slippery slope. Or rather the next step in a slope that started with Di. By 2040, they'll be arguing for giving Blair a state funeral. Or all PMs. Or anyone who's won an Olympic medal. Or passed their A levels.
The last great thing Maggie could do would be - just as WSC declined any peerages - to make it clear that she doesn't want this. It's the kind of stunt the French or Americans would pull, and it's got no place here.

She's the reason we moved to the Netherlands. My OH and kids will probably be happy the old bag gets a state funeral. Me? I'd rather have stayed put, but an OH bored out of his head because science funding dried up was too much to bear, so personally I think Mark should pay for her funeral, like any loving son would. He could probably raise a few mercenaries to be guard of honour.

You missed out:
Tommy Cooper
Jimmy Page
PG Wodehouse
Glenn Hoddle
Geoffrey Boycott
Wilfred Bramble and Harry H Corbett (the actor, not the one with his hand up sooty's arse).
I did wonder what the criteria were. She did win two wars (if you count Gulf one as a win and overlook the fact that Major was PM by the end of it)
The gun carriage they use is just around the corner from my office.

As far as I'm concerned "unpopular in Wales" is the best possible recommendation there is.

I'm with flanner on this.
This all smacks of too much enthusiastic point-scoring. Churchill's was the first since Wellington, and for a reason. Gladstone, Disraeli, Lloyd George - they didn't have one.

Gladstone most certainly did have one and disraeli knocked one back in his will. Lloyd George was a crook and everyone knew it at the time.
Wellington's was obvioulsy not for his service as PM (an unmitigated disaster)

<thanks to Thatch you live in the best country in the world>
What a bunch of unadulterated Crapola that is - the 'best' - good maybe but not the best from any objective standpoint - beginning with the weather.
The best from your social strata but not from the common Briton's i think - not nearly - let's see how the Iron Lady will be honored in Liverpool, Manchester and even parts of London.
It's so sick to hear the Iron Lady get so many accolades from the few folks who benefited from her 'reforms' it makes me want to vomit.
She was and would be if not demented a mean old uncaring bat IMO - the anti-Reagan, who at least did have a veneer of caring though his policies similarly launched the re-distribution of wealth from poor and middle class to the rich.

Seen the country recently?>>>>
That's what ten years of socialist idiocy does to the country.
Every generation has to learn about Labour governments the hard way. This lot have just been found out which is why you can prepare for a decade of Tory rule.
Did I mention that I'll get overtime on the big day? Maggie was always popular with plod. Right to the end.

And she was a Prime minister so popular, that her own party effectively kicked her out of office.
The spectre of Mark should also hang over her leadership - the man who allegedly made $400M (possibly £s) as a middle man in an official arms deal between UK and Saudi.
I think she should have been sent into exile with her friend that nice General Pinochet.
