Maps of Paris
Some of you were talking about what maps to get, and I wanted to tell you about an
i-phone app I just purchased. It's called "mtrip, Paris" It has a complete map of Paris with attractions listed, as well as hotels etc. It works in real time, giving distances and directions from wherever you are to the next place you are going, but does not require wifi. (thus no roaming charges). It also lets you build your itinerary while in the planning stage, and has all the attractions with info listed, to help in planning. The info is helpful and complements (could never replace!!) what people have said in this forum (I do love hearing everyones opinions)
I think it will be a useful tool for me, especially on the ground, so I just wanted to share it, in case someone else was interested

I told this to someone who will be traveling to Paris this year She does not have an IPHONE, she may have a BLACKBERRY.
If she uses this app or a similar one is there a roaming charge. I am not completely computer literate so I may be asking this the wrong way.
Does she need a phone that has global usuage for this app.
Thanks.

This app works 100% offline, so there are no roaming or other charges. It has off-line maps and directions. (Of course, you need to turn the "data roaming"feature on your phone to "off"). You are not using a phone network when using this app-but you do need to be sure that the GPS feature is on. That is how the map knows where you are, to provide directions, maps, etc.
I don't think it will work on a Blackberry, but they may have something similar-I really don't know. However, it will work with the iPOD Touch and the iPad.
I hope this helps.

Geosand-
Thanks for your comment. After reading what you wrote, I went back to the mtrip program and reread what was stated. It stated it works with the iPOD Touch. Then I saw some fine print that stated: "iPOD Touch users: The iPOD Touch does not offer a GPS feature. Although it uses wi-fi networks when available, you can't expect it to find a precise location" So the rest of the features work but not the directions feature. Fortunately all features work on the iphone & ipad-I need the directions feature! Thanks for bringing that up, so that iPOD Touch users are aware of the limitaiton.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to check it out.
I've been going through the various free Paris apps for the iPhone, and so far my favorites are the official Louvre app, and MetrO -- like the one you mentioned, it works completely offline so no roaming charges. It's basically the same functionality as the RATP site, but with much better UI (IMO): put in your starting and ending locations or metro stops and it gives you step by step directions, including the direction if the train. You download the maps/schedules ahead of time, and they have maps for just about every metro system worldwide, looks like.
The Louvre app is very slick, especially for a free app, and packs a lot of (English) info including maps and descriptions of the bigger pieces, into a nice little format.
