Map of the Roman Forum

Hi all

Has anyone see (and know how to obtain) a map of strictly the Roman Forum? Or for that matter a detailed guide? I am sure I can find something when I get there but I may as well get it beforehand and avoid running around looking for it.

thank you

flygirl-
I know you have seen some of Walter's (ParadiseLost) info on the Roman Forum. Be sure and check out his various walking tours, which have many pictures and research links included in them. All of his research added immeasurably to our recent visit to Rome.

For anyone interested in the archaeology of Rome, the Oxford Archaeological Guide: Rome, by Amanda Claridge, is indispensable. Over 50 pages are devoted to the Lower Forum and Upper Via Sacra, with detailed maps, descriptions, and histories.

Although I discovered Walter's walking tour postings after my last trip to Rome, so have not had the pleasure of following them, I agree that they are some of the most interesting and well-researched descriptions available anywhere and I have them all printed out and waiting for my next trip.

Flyfish - just ordered the book. Doubt I'll take it with me (480 pp and over a pound in weight) but I will copy the applicable pages. or maybe I'll just deal with the extra weight. depends on how much space I have!

Good choice. You may find that you'll end up taking the entire book (we did), especially if you plan to visit other archaeological sites in and just outside of Rome. It's so well written and informative that I find myself taking it off the shelf from time to time to read about places I haven't visited, and likely may never visit.

Flyfish - the book came in last week. It's FABULOUS and it's definitely going in my carry on. It's not nearly as big/heavy as I thought. Amazon said "1.2 pounds". Not at all. not even a pound I'd say.

Hi flygirl, Got your email , I just got in late last night.

I also ditto flyfish on the OAG-Rome and I see you do also now that you have a copy.

You might also want to buy "The Roman Forum" put out by the 'Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma'. It's a large thin paperback for 7.75e and sold at the Forum or any Rome museum or historical site with a bookstore.

Hard to miss, they usually have a section of these 'Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma' books covering most of the sites and museums in various languages.

They have maps, diagrams, photos and info on the Roman Forum.

You can see the (reconstructed) 'Temple of Vesta' as usual but the Atrium and House of the Vestals is shut-off.

Also I noticed this last year but the Curia Julia is usually closed except on the weekends.

And as usual the Roman Forum Museum is 'hit or miss' as to when it is open. Best bet is in the mornings.

I'm still jetlagged and just finished off a bottle of wine I brought back so I'll save my rant about these closing for another time .
Regards, Walter
