Mani peninsula suggestions

Jump to last reply

After a week in Nafplion in mind-May, we have 3 days/2 nights until we must be back at the Athens airport. We have a car and want to visit Mani. Was thinking one night in Monemvasia and then the 2nd night closer to the airport before our noon flight. Suggestions? Thanks.

Monemvasia is very beautiful, especially if you will chose a hotel in the old city on the island.

However this is not the Mani peninsula....
There is the Messenian and the Laconian Mani.

The Messenian Mani has Stoupa and Kardamili as main villages, but it would be totally out of your way.

The Laconian Mani is between Monemvasia and Kalamata, Gytheio,
Areopoli, Gerolimenas and Vatheia are the most known villages/towns.

Since you will be passing through Sparti, i would recommend to visit Mistras, which is a must see :)

On your way back to Athens, i would overnight in Loutraki, which is just 1 hour and 15 minutes away from the airport.

Loutraki has a very long beach, is a lovely town, very popular in the summer among the Athenians, and good basis to visit the salt lake of Vouliagmeni, the ancient temple of Hera and the old lighthouse. Just above the city there a monastery ( Agios Patapios) that offers a unique view of the Peloponnese and the Corinth Canal.

Loutraki has many good middle class hotels, and also a 5 star property with a casino. ( no crowds in the city because of the casino though)

A great restaurant that you should visit should you stay in Loutraki is Maistrali :)
