We are traveling to Malta in early April to spend Holy week in Malta. We would like to experience the Easter pagentry and processions but are unsure if we should stay in Valletta or one of the smaller Maltese villages. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi. probably you are already booked. But just in case. Most hotels are located either in the Sliema/St Julains area or in the Bugibba/Qawra/St Pauls Bay area. There are also a few in Valletta/Floriana. I would say go for the latter and travel by bus. In the budget category, Grand Harbour Hotel commands some magnificent views of the harbour. The Osbourne's strongest point is its food. The Phoenicia is a luxury historic hotel in the historic bastions and less than 100m from the largest bus station. If you can afford it, go for it
Bear in mind that the bus service normally stops on Easter Sunday between noon and 4pm-ish, though still to be confirmed for 2012.
I suggest you spend Thursday evening in Valletta visiting all there is to see there around 10 different churches and many other places open to the public have Easter related exhibitions.
For Good Friday go to Zejtun or Zebbug for the Good Friday Procession as they are the best ones. Go at around 5pm unless you also want to experience the 3pm remembrance of the passing of the Lord.
On Sunday morning go to Most to see the 'Irxoxt' the running with the statue of the risen Lord. You can also see the amazing church of Mosta while there.
Valletta offers good hotel options 5 and 3 star. I also recommend getting an apartment on www.uniqueholidaymalta.com as it is good quality and cheaper.
I also recommend you visit Valletta during the day and see the cathedral. A good way also is to see the audio show Valletta Living History (www.maltaattraction.com) that way you get a good introduction to the history of Malta and know waht is best to see after.
Update: No bus services stoppages are planned for this Easter Sunday!
