Malpensa to Milano/Porto Garibaldi o Centrale Question...

I'm arriving in Milano at 12:15 on a Friday and am leaving immediately for Rome via train.

Even though there is a train leaving Centrale at 14:05, I'm going to give myself a few hours to go through customs, take the Malpensa Express to a train station, and catch the train to either Porto Garibaldi (15:00 train) or Centrale (16:00 train).

I'd prefer to leave from Garibaldi because the train leaves earlier and because I wouldn't have to ride the Express as long.

Having only flown through Malpensa once some time ago and having never used Express, I just don't know what to expect. Am I giving myself enough time to get to the train? Too much time?

Thank you for your thoughts.

If it were me I would opt for the 16:00 train and avoid the rush. After flying into Malpensa many times, clearing passport, retrieving your luggage, and walking past customs does not take too long.

We always take the Milano Shuttle Bus into Stazione Centrale, but I've read the train from Malpensa is very smooth. In any case...give yourself more time.

Buon viaggio,

I would wait until you arrive to decide which train to take. To me, even worse than missing a train is reserving a train with such an ample time cushion that I spend hours sitting around the station waiting for the train I reserved.

Porta Garibaldi is a much smaller station than Milano Centrale. I once took a train arriving there, and would probably prefer to use that station, all other things being equal. However, Milano Centrale is certainly not bad either.

The problem with the bus to Milano Centrale is that it often gets stuck in traffic and then it leaves you at street level, and you have to lug your bags up to the train level. I haven't flown into Malpensa since the train began arriving to Milano Centrale, but I would certainly take the train now.

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts.... bvlenci, I don't want to wait until I get there because the cost goes from 29€ to 86€...a big difference. If the difference were not so great, I'd consider it.

Grazie mille!

First of all:
Fast trains from Milano Centrale to Rome leave at
14.00, 14.05, 14.15, 15.00, 15.15, 16.00, 16.05, 16.15, 16.25, 17.00, 17.15 .........
Fast trains from Milano Porta Garibaldi to Rome leave at
14.03, 14.27, 15.12, 15.34, 17.03, 17.12, 17.27 ........

Secondly:
if you travel in the next months you could fly from Malpensa to Rome as well: MXP dp 17.10 - FCO ar 18.30, fares start at 60 EUR with 1 piece of checked in luggage.

Thirdly:
the train ride from MXP to Milano Centrale lasts only 10 min longer than to Porta Garibaldi

Fourthly:
at Milano Centrale, you may use the moving stairway in order to go to the platform level
