Mallorca or Ibiza in Late march/Early april?

We live on the US East coast and are limited in our travel options by our teenager's school vacation time. So, for this time period, in looking at some options we have, we noted the possibility of spending 4 or so days on one of the Balearic islands and maybe another 3 in Barcelona. Clearly, the beaches in the Islands won't be very useful for swimming at this time of year but is there enough else to do?

You can experience the great outdoors, but since it's low season, it isn't the same as being on the mainland, but of course it will be Holy Week at the end of March. Easter celebrations start on Palm Sunday.

There are lots of things to do om mallorca, regardless of the time of year. Although the weather will be a little cool for outdoor swinmming, there are many places to go and see. Four days won't be enough! Try:

Soller
Valledemossa
Deia
Lluc
Pollenca
Alcudia
Inca
and of course Palma itself.

Absolutely no debate.

Ibiza is a summer destination, it is now becoming more upmarket but it is still a summer party island.

We have been to Mallorca 6 times in the last 3 years as it is our out of season short break choice.

The weather at that time of year can be very unpredictable. Last year it rained and I do mean rained for 4 days non stop. The sort of rain where you are wet in 2 minutes. Solid for 4 days. Previously we usually find the weather is colder (15oC) and drier in mid February when all the blossom is out. It's beautiful.

Mallorca has had bad press in Europe over the years due to about 10 sq miles of its huge area. Even Palma Nova and Magaluf are dragging themselves up. The rest of the island is on a par with Tuscany in terms of culture and beauty.

Lifeman has covered the main cultural centures. Valledemossa is famous for its art and links to Chopin.

The old train from Palma to Soller is one a lifes great small trips. I would over the coast between Palma and Pollensa via Soller. The mountains retain a lot of moisture. Last February we drove from Santanyi (which we love) leaving a near clouless sky and 18oC. We arrived in Valledemossa wearing shorts and T shirts to be met by 5oC and rain.

Palma is one of Spains great cities. (mostly overlooked by tourists). It has a huge marina with endless yachts, yacht clubs and bars. The old town is well restored and the Cathedral is stunning.

I can't imagine my life as having been complete without a trip to Bar Abaco. Based in the base of an old town manor house with huse vaulted ceilings. The bar is literally full of fresh fruit and flower which fill the air with their smell. There are PARROTS flying around the place and you would not be suprised to see Jack Sparrow in the corner.

Not to be confused with a bar ON Abaco where we will be on Friday!

You could use this agency who source Finca (farmhouse) hotels which usually 4 star plus. We have and they are effecient.

A few years ago we completed the trip you suggest. The flight between Barcelona and Palma is nothing. You land before you take off - it's that short. I personally would go to the city first then move on to Mallorca. I don't personally like Barcelona - too big, too busy, too many tourists. City first then quiet island break seemed to make sense to us.

Mallorca enough attractions to be occupied for several weeks - everything you can imagine: mountains, scenery, caves, monasteries, cathedrals, medieval towns, picturesque ports, castles, wineries, farmhouse museums, art museums etc.

Ibiza is sort of barren and has not much to offer besides beaches and night clubs.

Swimming will be possible by end of March - I have done it several times.
