Malcolm Miller Tour Chartres
My husband and I are planning on a trip to Chartres in May. Is the Malcolm Miller tour worth it? If yes, how far in advance do we need to book or can we wing it? Also, if you have the phone number for reservations this would be appreciated.

Dear Sondra,

It is definitely worth it! He picks several windows and explains them in detail (so his tours vary in topics everyday), which is a lot more informative than just looking at them. I don't think you need to make a reservation - we just showed up at Chartres and joined the tour at the designated time. We also went in May, and there aren't as many people that time of the year. Enjoy!!

Kay

We just returned from Paris (see "Just Back from Paris" posted today). Chartre and Mr. Miller's tours (we took both the 12 and 2:45) were highlights of the trip. You do not need to book in advance, just show up (meet just outside the gift shop). Take a pair of binoculars to really see the windows. Most people recommend a half day for Chartre but we could have spent a day or two there easily. So by all means GO!!!

If you want to see the Labaraynth(sp) you'll have to look carefully as it is not easy to see (unfortunately they had chairs covering it when we were there).

Have a great trip!!

No tour you take will be worth more!!!!
Plan on taking at least the morning and afternoon tour. Frankly, if I ever get back there, I will take it for two days! When I went, he asked who had been there the day before so he would do a minimum of repeating.

I was looking for something else (a story for my daughter on this weekend's "All Things Considered") - - and I stumbled on this story on the Feb 11 weekend edition, telling about Malcolm miller and his tours of Chartres Cathedral.

www.npr.org/ramfiles/watc/20010211.watc.06.rmm

Informative, if you have never enjoyed one of Mr. Miller's tours - - and a nice reminiscence, if you have.

Best wishes,

Rex

Postscript: You might wonder why top two similar threads with this information. I searched on "Mallcolm" and found these two thread - - and it didn't seem that one was more worthy than the other to which I might attach this new message.

If this forum had an easier way to locate and direct readers to a specific (previous) posting by a unique identifier (timestamp), it would not be necessary to repeat information so tediously. This is my new crusade, and I am thinking about adding this postscript (when applicable) to every new reply I make here. If you agree with me, then please write to Danny Mangin or David Downing - - [email protected] - - and encourage them to move forward with this improvement (and any others they have up their sleeves) to this best-on-the-web travel forum!
