Hi everyone,

I am tagging along with my dad on one of his business trips to Mainz from June 26-July 1st. He will be doing some work while we are there, so I will have quite a bit of free time. During my dads free time we are going to go to Munich for a day, and we will take a boat ride down the Rhine.

On Tuesday I will have the whole day to myself, and am trying to plan a day trip. I will say I am quite ambitious as a traveler, and wouldn't even mind traveling out of the country. Does anyone have any suggestions for a long day trip out of Mainz? Thanks in advance!

Munich as a day trip from Mainz? You will waste more than half of the day for travel time, and a city like Munich cannot be seen in a few hours. I have difficulties understanding plans like that if there is more than enough to see and do at the doorstep of where people are staying.

If I were you I would spend that free Tuesday exploring the area around Mainz. For example, the Rheingau region on the opposite bank of the Rhine. This would include the elegant spa city of Wiesbaden, the Romanesque abbey of Eberbach where "The Name of the Rose" was filmed, wine villages like Kiedrich, Eltville and Oestrich-Winkel, the Germania monument on the ridge above Rüdesheim overlooking the valley, and if you don't mind tourist traps, finally Rüdesheim itself. More than enough to fill a day very close to Mainz.

Other options within a range of one or max. two hours on the train include Heidelberg, the cathedrals and cities of Worms and Speyer, the Mosel valley, the romantic old university town of Marburg, Frankfurt, Cologne...

Trier, Germany's oldest city with Roman roots and lots to see, is worth the trip from Mainz. A 20-Euro Rheinland-Pfalz single (daypass) will get you there and back. Stop in Cochem for a look around on the way or a meal overlooking the Mosel River.

Quokka, my grandmother whom I am very close to and my late mother were born in Munich. I have traveled there quite a few times, and know the area fairly well. I just feel a need to travel there when I am close even if its just for a bit.

I plan on exploring Mainz on Sunday and Monday, and was under the impression that I could see a lot of it in those two days, so I thought a little trip somewhere on Tuesday would work out well, but thanks for your concern

If you haven't had a chance to explore Frankfurt, then that would be a good city to put on your list. It is one of Germanys oldest and most historic cities. Chock full of museums, art, some lovely churches, including one of the oldest in Germany, the Justinus church in Frankfurt Höchst, but the city is lively and lots of fun too.

Was just thinking the same thing and stumbled on this page!

@ Russ: I had just the same (or almost the same) idea. Do you think driving (a car) from Mainz to Burg Eltz, then to Trier and finally back to Mainz (appr. 400 km roundtrip) is do-able all in one day? (I'll be staying in Mainz, so must come back eventually, even if a lil' bit late...)

How much time would you spend in Burg Eltz to say you've seen the basics?
I've been in Trier before, so I can estimate how much time I need there to see what there's to see, but I'd really need some help if I am to put Burg Eltz into the (one-day-trip) equasion.

I haven't driven that in a day, but I'm sure I wouldn't want to. Burg Eltz tours last roughly an hour. That's about all you'd need. If you've seen Trier, you might instead visit Cochem - really close to Burg Eltz and a nice place for an afternoon. Take a chairlift ride to the peak overlooking town, have a nice meal, wander the cobblestoned streets. The falconry show at Cochem's Reicshburg castle is great.
